Job description


Working under the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students (ODUS), the director of student life (DSL) reports to the dean of undergraduate students through the associate dean and to the head of the residential college through the dean of the residential college. The DSL is the primary staff member within the residential college responsible for supporting and enhancing the undergraduate residential and extracurricular experience of students from all four years residing in or affiliated with that college (800 to 900 undergraduate students).

The DSL manages crises and emergencies and works to support students of concern. Together with other colleagues, the DSL encourages the highest standards of good citizenship and respect for others by resolving conflicts, upholding expectations for good conduct, and helping students to understand the value of living in a diverse community. The DSL oversees the Residential College Adviser (RCA) Program within the college; and plans, implements, and supports non-academic educational and social programming. As the only member of ODUS and Campus Life within the residential college, the DSL represents all non-academic priorities and concerns within the college system and shares with other staff members responsibility for the development of student life policies. The DSL is regularly asked to assist ODUS, the Council of Heads, Office of the Dean of the College, and Office of the Vice President for Campus Life with special projects, assignments, and committee work.

Crisis Response and Management

• Serves as case manager in the residential college. Meets and follows up with students around issues of alcohol concerns and transports, health and wellness matters, safety concerns, and personal and interpersonal conflicts (including roommate issues);
• Coordinates efforts to assist students in personal crises and serves as the liaison between the student, his or her family, academic deans, and other relevant campus life offices;
• Administers the BASICS referral process for alcohol education;
• Administers the formal consultation process, whereby a student is evaluated at Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) and treatment recommendations are given to the DSL for follow-up with the student;
• Participates in weekly meetings with the residential college dean and director of studies regarding academic and non-academic support for students of concern;
• Represents the college in bimonthly case conferencing with CPS staff and associate dean of undergraduate students;
• Represents the residential college in family meetings where a student’s wellness is of highest concern and where continued enrollment and/or residency is under review because of health or wellness issues, and negotiates on behalf of ODUS non-academic requirements for continued enrollment or readmission;
• Together with the associate dean, writes official communications to students regarding treatment recommendations or conditions where ODUS has placed conditions for reinstatement;

• Tracks and works closely with students returning to the University who must meet conditions on readmission;
• Following appropriate protocols, records all non-academic crisis advising and interventions or meetings to ODUS Notes;
• Takes up to six weeks per year of on-call duty in the dean-on-call system for the entire undergraduate student body, communicating with Public Safety, CPS, relevant hospital staff, ODUS deans, and residential college deans to manage crises involving students from all six colleges outside of business hours.

Discipline/Conflict Resolution

• Serves as a member of the Residential College Disciplinary Board (RCDB), which adjudicates lesser behavioral infractions for all undergraduate students;
• Prepares for consideration by RCDB all cases that involve members of the DSL’s own college;
• Writes and sends official letters communicating RCDB outcomes
• Addresses various community standards issues as they arise in the residential college;
• Issues and enforces all dean’s no-contact orders for the college;
• Serves on the Information Technology Policy Review/Revision Panel;
• Serves as an adviser to students in hearings before the Committee on Discipline or Title IX Panel, which adjudicate academic, behavioral and sexual misconduct cases for all students where separation from the University, either temporary or permanent, is a possible outcome.
• Meets with students to mediate and resolve conflicts that may not represent violations of University rules, but are nonetheless disruptive or are negatively impacting a student’s experience

Supervision of Residential College Adviser (RCA) and Residential College Leadership Team (RCLT) Program within College

• Coordinates recruiting, interviewing, hiring, evaluation, and (where necessary) termination of between 12 to 18 juniors and seniors who serve as Residential College Advisers (RCAs);
• Along with the other DSLs and associate dean, plans and implements fall and spring training for the RCAs for all six residential colleges, along with in-service trainings throughout the year;
• Supervises and mentors RCAs throughout the school year by holding weekly core group meetings and monthly one-on-one meetings to discuss administrative concerns, roommate issues, discipline, crises, and on-going RCA-initiated programming;
• Oversees the RCA on-call system and associated logging and reporting by placing two RCAs as on-call support in the college every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night throughout the academic year;
• Oversees college RCA budget;
• Monitor RCA meal usage to ensure that RCAs are spending adequate time dining with their zees;
• Participates with fellow DSLs in formal assessment of RCA training;

• Administers RCA evaluations and provide guidance and feedback on performance;
• Organizes and oversees RCLT meetings ensuring that they are effective and worthwhile for all participants.

Additional Residential College Programming and Student Life Responsibilities

• Reviews all incoming first-year matriculation and housing forms and coordinates all first-year roommate and housing assignments within the college;
• Meets with students by appointment and through drop-in hours around all non-academic aspects of college and life, referring them to other offices as appropriate;
• Coordinates a set of first year residential experience (FYRE) programs and opportunities, framed to signal important community values related to: civility and citizenship, health and wellbeing, inclusion and belonging, personal growth and development.
• Selects, mentors, and meets weekly with the College Council, a group of student leaders in the college who oversee all social programming and college-wide events;
• Oversees College Council budget;
• Coordinates non-academic educational programming in the college, through collaborations with Career Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, University Health Services and other offices within the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students and Campus Life;
• Collaborates with the director of studies to select, hire and train the Peer Academic Advisers (PAAs) and establish advising teams between the RCAs and PAAs;
• Oversees non-academic programming by the resident graduate students in the college;
• Works directly with the Admission Office to support Princeton Preview by overseeing captain and host recruitment and non-academic programming within the college;
• On a rotating basis, supports the non-academic and co-curricular components of the summer Freshman Scholars Institute, including recruiting, training, and supervising RCAs and graduate coordinators for the program;
• Attends all ODUS and Campus Life meetings and retreats;
• Serves in the rotation of protest/demonstration monitors;
• Serves as the liaison and conduit for information/nominations of students from the college who are under consideration for ODUS senior prizes;
• Performs other duties as assigned by the dean of undergraduate students, associate dean, College Head or the dean of the residential college.


Essential requirements
The position requires an advanced degree in an appropriate discipline and at least six years of relevant work experience. A strong preference will be given to candidates who have college or university experience in crisis management, judicial affairs and/or residential life staff supervision and program design. Experience with student activities and event planning is also helpful. Candidates should also have an understanding of and commitment to the aims of a liberal arts education; excellent organizational and problem-solving skills; strong interpersonal skills as a well as a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and to interact effectively with students, faculty, and other administrators; the ability to respond effectively in emergency situations; strong analytical skills; the ability to communicate well orally and in writing; sensitivity to the needs and concerns of students from diverse background; and a willingness to live proximate to campus.
