Department Summary:

The Department of Information Science provides and supports resources, research, and service for education and leadership to the information science community and prepares information professionals of the highest quality to serve dynamic roles in the state, the nation, and the world.

Position Overview:

The Information Science Department at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire a Student & Program Specialist to join our team. Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: * Processes student admissions for the masters programs in the department, based on COI admissions parameters. * Interacts with prospective and new students. * Manages student data and generates data reports on admissions, etc. as requested. * Stays current on UNT and COI policies and procedures regarding admissions. * Represents COI on campus and off-campus committees and task groups concerned with admissions.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate’s Degree and two years of office administration experience; or any equivalent
combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Demonstrated ability to provide outstanding customer service.
• Demonstrated skill in verbal and written communications
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Ability handle multiple priorities
• Strong attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Motivated, self-directed and have the ability and willingness to communicate enthusiastically with diverse populations in a positive, courteous and professional manner.
  • Familiarity with the graduate admissions process at UNT.
  • Familiarity with UNT systems and policies.

Produces detailed, accurate, and accessible records and maintains confidentiality for MS students. Stays current on UNT and COI policies and procedures regarding admissions.


Maintains confidential information about prospective, current, and non-current students through accurate entry into two in-house databases and maintenance of up-to-date, required documentation according to UNT and/or COI student record policies.


Evaluates applications and recommends admissions in a timely and accurate manner. Interviews applicants to obtain information about interests, aptitudes, and abilities. Composes and reviews degree plan worksheets for potential students.


Reviews and admits deferred IS Master’s students if qualifications are met. Reviews admissions on a regular basis and processes admissions decisions based on COI admission parameters.


Represents COI on campus and off-campus committees and task groups concerned with admissions.


Supervises general department records and records of student admission. Develops and maintains procedures used to maintain all digital student records.


Generates data reports on admissions, etc. as requested.


Interacts with applicants who do not meet regular admission requirements and recommends possible Grad Prep status to prepare them for graduate studies. Develops and maintains policies and procedures for recommending applicants into Grad Prep program.
