Job Description:

Anesthesia and Nursing Care
Key roles for this position is to provide safe anesthesia to patients undergoing procedures and provide clinical support to the emergency and critical service. The expectation is that the individual will communicate effectively with the patient care team to determine the needs and priorities for the patient under their immediate care. They will bring in the area a positive “can do” attitude.
As a veterinary technician, providing high quality nursing care is essential for the care of our patients and the success of the service. The person is expected to have excellent nursing skills and a good basic understanding of anesthesia. They should know when to ask for help or seek guidance and will act as the primary anesthesia nurse on cases with direct or indirect oversight from anesthesiologists.
We want staff to promote patient safety and quality care by practicing active listening, maintaining open communication with the patient care team and building work relationships built on the foundation of mutual trust and respect. We want our staff to encourage a positive work environment which is done by being coolheaded/even-keeled during any situation and maintain a positive attitude.

Professional Development and Continuing Education
It is important the individual continue to increase and develop knowledge and skills. As a new employee, it is important staff continue to grow and focus on developing their skills and knowledge in the specialty area. As an AAHA accredited practice, it is necessary to ensure staff obtain the required hours of CE. To be successful the individual should take an active role in continuing their education in the field of veterinary medicine and develop a strong understanding of hospital operations especially in anesthesia and pain management. Those new to the field of Anesthesia should focus their attention on mastering the skills and knowledge for this level and gain a strong understanding of hospital workflows.

Billing/Documentation/Communication
This position is integral to ensure that patient records are complete and proper communication has occurred with the entire Patient Care team. In order to provide the best patient Care, documentation of patient’s treatment sheets should be accurate and thoroughly depict changes in status or patient events. Part of the medical record includes that all changes are entered in a timely fashion and accurately reflect what happened to the patient.

Communication needs to be clear and concise. This is especially important when doing patient hand offs or calling clinicians to give patient updates. Our expectation is that staff will be thorough when relaying information. They are the patient’s advocate and in so must communicate any concerns that have not been addressed to the appropriate person.

Hospital Cleanliness and General Service Support
Responsible for not compromising and adhering to the required levels of cleanliness throughout the service while creating a safe and accident free environment. Abiding by infection control protocols is of utmost importance for the safety of our patients and staff. The overall aesthetics of the hospital area is a direct reflection on the high quality care we provide so it is important the areas are kept in pristine condition.

Mentoring/Teaching/Communication
Create a safe and welcoming learning environment that promotes further education and development of staff and students by fostering positivity, respect and trust. Communicate in a warm and friendly manner to all parties of the patient care team and ask frequently; “how can I help?” Promote teamwork within the service and with lateral services to meet the needs of our patients and effectively support team members. Strive to build cohesive relationships among staff, students, and clients by creating a culture of dialogue and inviting thoughts and ideas to discuss. Assist others in learning anesthesia protocols and procedures. We want our staff to encourage a positive work environment which is done by being coolheaded/even-keeled during any situation and maintain a positive attitude.

Advertised Salary:

Competitive salary based on experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Technician I: High school diploma or equivalent and two years of veterinary experience or graduate of a veterinary technology program.

Technician II: Certification or licensure as a veterinary technician and two years of experience working as a veterinary technician providing surgical and/or anesthesia support.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A base understanding anesthesia and pain management
• Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations involving drug calculations
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and terminology.
• Excellent customer service skills; excellent verbal, listening, and written communication skills
• Strong organizational skills
• Ability to work within a team and perform with minimum supervision
• Ability to multitask as well as ability to set and change priorities in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while maintaining a positive attitude
• Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule
• Ability to set priorities and solve problems
• Demonstrate consistent professional conduct and meticulous attention to detail.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills with patients, staff, and other members of the patient care team
• Critical thinking skills and a positive attitude; Able to think independently and demonstrate good problem solving skills while making timely decisions
• Able to work in a team environment and collaborate with a variety of personnel in a positive manner
• Open to accept constructive criticism from senior staff and clinicians and respond accordingly.
