The mission of OIBR addresses the world’s most pressing health, economic, social, educational, and policy challenges through the facilitation and promotion of social and behavioral science research.

The UGA DeLTA project is funded by a 5-year, $2.9 million grant from the National Science Foundation. The aim of DeLTA is to transform UGA STEM undergraduate education by rethinking and reexamining assumptions, practices, and culture that shape undergraduate teaching and learning; adopting new goals that surmount persistent problems in education; and meeting those goals through new policies, practices, and ways of thinking. DeLTA is achieving this aim through work at the course, department, and university level.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in education, discipline-based education research, or a related discipline, or PhD in a STEM discipline with discipline-based education research experience preferred;
Additional preferred qualifications: One year of experience with faculty development; One year of experience with the development and implementation of educational materials, including online tools; One year of experience with writing, communication, and teamwork across disciplines.

Position Summary:

The Sr. Coordinator of Departmental Practices in STEM Undergraduate Education will develop responsive resources to support new policies and practices related to the formative and summative evaluation of teaching at the department level. The incumbent will provide consultation, training, and support of departmental initiatives related to: evaluating teaching in ways that align with national models and new teaching evaluation policy at UGA; teaching in equitable and just ways and creating inclusive classroom climates in undergraduate STEM courses and majors; closing the assessment loop on evaluation of teaching data collected by individual instructors via continuous improvement practices. This position will help departments pilot and fully implement new resources that meet DeLTA’s core commitments and build collaborations among STEM departments and between the Center for Teaching and Learning (and Office of Instruction) and STEM departments.

This will be a limited term position.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Knowledge of literature on institutional change, teaching evaluation, and diversity, equity, and inclusion;
Knowledge of literature in discipline-based education research within one of the STEM disciplines.

Create resources needed by departments to support undergraduate education. Resources could include peer observation protocols, guides for instructor self-reflection, templates for feedback on teaching from peer observers, templates for annual review of teaching or review of teaching for promotion and tenure, guides for creating equitable and just lessons and classroom climates, guides for collecting data on student learning and closing the feedback loop, etc.

Design and offer workshops for STEM departments that address the core commitments and components related to the core commitments. Workshops could include training for peer observers, how to offer feedback after peer observation, how to create equitable classroom climates, using data on student learning to inform teaching, using assessment data across sections of the same course.

Meet with department heads, faculty, and committees to assess where they are in their adoption of the core commitments and determine the resources needed (e.g., tools, resources, workshops, etc.). Meet with the DeLTA PI team weekly to understand the project goals, processes, and progress of each. Provide periodic updates on programs and services implemented and offer critical feedback and insight.

Contribute to the CTL’s Teaching & Learning Team by extending the work designed for STEM departments to apply across campus. Participate in weekly CTL team meetings and consult with the Associate Director for Teaching and Learning on project progress and efforts. Under the guidance of the Associate Director for Teaching and Learning and DeLTA project PI, develop and execute plans and protocols aimed at the continued expansion of the uptake of the DeLTA core commitments. Innovatively and strategically connect the work of DeLTA and CTL (and by extension the University Office of Instruction). Engage in professional development based on the successful candidate’s individual development plan.
