Departmental Overview

Enhancing the health and wellness of our Cal community is a big job. Rec Sports is dedicated to providing an ongoing variety of educational, fitness, and wellness opportunities to support a healthy lifestyle. We offer classes and facilities to support our students, faculty, and staff in both their personal growth and physical fitness goals.

The Sport Club program consists of 34 sport clubs and approximately 1800+ students.



Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of Sport Clubs will administer the day to day operations of the Sport Clubs program by assisting with the development of timelines, program policies, budgetary controls, programmatic goals and objectives.

Key responsibilities:
  • Plans, organizes and implements recreational programs. (Sport Clubs, that are inclusive, adaptive, and appropriate for individuals with a variety of abilities.
  • Supervises employee performance, career development and adherence to job standards.
  • Provides primary supervision of student staff and programmatic interns.
  • Selects, trains and supervises student staff and programmatic interns.
  • Submit requests for use of recreational facilities.
  • Monitors budget and makes budget recommendations to manager for assigned activities/programs. Manages operating budgets of 34 sport club teams, including working with club leaders to monitor collection of dues, projection of club expenses and revenue, and oversees club fundraising opportunities and approval of purchases.
  • Implements program policies and procedures.
  • Assists with appropriate public relations and promotional programs
  • Maintains files, records and prepares reports as necessary.
  • Reports safety issues to appropriate personnel and recommends improvements.
  • Works with student officers, coaches, and participants to make appropriate travel plans for a variety of competitions, national events, and tournaments.
  • Assists in planning and supervision of club events and supports on-campus competition

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum two years experience administering competitive programming on a collegiate level.
  • Has knowledge of program activity and industry best practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership and inter-personal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally.
  • Strong service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, critical thinking, develop original ideas, creative problem solving skills in a varied and challenging environment.
  • Must be able to work effectively, across all organization levels, internally and externally.
  • Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking.
  • Must have demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be proficient in the use of basic computer applications.
  • Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.
  • Experience administering sport programming for individuals of varying abilities.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.
  • Red Cross CPR required.
  • Standard First Aid Training Certification required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in a related field
