Description
I. Qualifications:

A. Education:

1. Graduate of an accredited school/program of nursing; earned baccalaureate degree.

2. Graduate of an accredited program of nurse anesthesia.

3. Holds a minimum of a doctoral degree or enrolled in a doctoral program.

4. Has a minimum of five years of experience as a nurse anesthetist and demonstrates a strong background in clinical anesthesia.

5. Has some preparation in the areas of administration and instruction; and demonstrates an interest in the educational process.

6. Has current and appropriate preparation to mentor doctoral projects.

B. Expertise:

Maintains current and valid District of Columbia licensure as a professional registered nurse and nurse anesthetist. Meets requirements and maintains recertification by the National Board of Certification & Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists Demonstrates ability to instruct and provide students with knowledge of principles and theory of anesthesia, equipment and techniques. Remains current in theories and methods of instruction by: Current membership in the AANA Review of current anesthesia literature; Attendance at state, local and national meetings; Maintaining professional clinical privileges and practice of anesthesia

II. Specific Duties

A. Job Relationship:

Has an appointment within the School of Nursing and Health Studies

Responsible to the Program Director, Assistant Program Director, and the Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Studies.

2. Works in cooperation with the Program Director to accomplish duties.

B. Responsibilities

1. Clinical Site Liaison - Primary, enrichment and optional sites; has regular communication with site coordinators.

2. Affiliation Agreements - Yearly review and as needed update of current agreements; secures additional sites and agreements when identified as necessary by program faculty.

3. Site Evaluations - Performs site visits at a minimum on an annual basis and documents visit findings; coordinates the collation and analysis of site evaluation forms; reports analysis at DNAP Faculty meetings.

4. Affiliation Information- maintains current comprehensive documentation related to all sites.

5. Clinical Faculty - coordinates the analysis of site faculty evaluations; databases maintained; reports analysis at DNAP Faculty meetings; available to faculty to resolve clinical student issues (or appointee if unavailable); assures current licenses and certification of clinical faculty.

6. Student Contact - Available to clinical students; appoints DNAP faculty member in times of unavailability - informs students and Director/Assistant.

7. Clinical Orientation - Schedules and develops program just prior to semester 3 (oftentimes in May), before entering clinical; provides students with written guidelines/policies (reviewed and updates yearly); coordinates student acquisition of lockers, pages, scrub cards at primary site; advises students of procedures at out-rotation sites; coordinates introduction of students to all faculty at clinical sites (group photos, bios, and introductory letters).

8. Student Conferences - Provides input to Director/Assistant Director on student clinical performance; complete student conference forms; Schedules mid-semester and end of semester student conferences; conducts conferences in conjunction with Director and/or Assistant Director.

9. Daily Student Evaluations - Coordinates tracking of student daily evaluation; coordinate collation and analysis on a semester basis; identifies students who fall below expectations and reports to Director/Assistant Director.

10. Clinical Evaluation Tools - Evaluates and revises forms as needed. Graduate Nursing Programs - Interfaces with other SNHS programs.

11. Publications - Publishes yearly a minimum of one peer-reviewed manuscript.

12. Rotation Schedule - Coordinates student rotations; informs sites of student rotations; revises schedule as necessary.

13. Vacation Schedule - Coordinates and approves student requests within established guidelines; maintains request forum N855.

14. Rotations - Develop/updates objectives for each rotation; coordinates the analysis of student evaluations of rotations; reports analysis at DNAP meetings.

15. Care Plans - Collects and assures minimum numbers as prescribed in semester guidelines; reviews mentors written comments; reports review at DNAP Faculty meetings; revises/updates care plan forms.

16. Case Numbers - Collects and reviews student case number reports on a monthly basis; coordinates review of numbers and analysis with rotations; identifies areas of low or insufficient numbers; provides advice to students on method of recording for accuracy and completeness; informs clinical coordinators of identified student case requirement needs.

17. Student Files - Maintains student files for clinicals (daily evaluations, case number records, semester conference documents, etc.); assures current license, ASLS, and PALS on file.

18. Clinical course Website - maintains website for clinical activities - call, vacation request, communication tool; assures all program faculty have site access with instructor access.

19. Employer Relations - coordinates on campus recruitment activities in accordance with program policy.

20. Course Lectures -Provides lectures in all DNAP courses as schedules by course coordinator; provides test bank questions based on lectures.

21. Accreditation Activities - Participates in activities directed at maintaining program accreditation under the direction of the Program Director.

22. Faculty Meetings - Attends NHS, DNAP. and committee meetings as scheduled.

23. Recruitment Activities - Participates in all NHS recruitment events, Open Houses; participates in student interviews and admissions selection committee.

24. Student Events - Participates in all program and SNHS student events - Graduation, Research Presentations, Scholars Day, etc.

25. Participate in development of clinical performance improvement and remediation plans in conjunction with the Assistant Program Director.

a. Advise students with respect to clinical performance

b. Develop strategies/plans to improve identified areas of weakness

c. Provide Lab and/or tutoring sessions as appropriate
