The Orthopaedic Research Laboratory within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking a Research and Development Engineer to apply a variety of engineering skills in collaboration with surgical and research faculty to execute experiments addressing orthopaedic engineering problems. The successful candidate will have expertise in mechanical testing of materials for failure analysis (Instron, Kuka, etc.), knowledge of sensors and software systems necessary for data acquisition (AMTI, Tekscan, etc.), expertise with CAD design and fabrication (SOLIDWORKS, Fusion 360, CNC Machining, etc.), knowledge of 3D mathematics and joint coordinate systems (ROMER, simVITRO, etc.), and the ability to manage data collection, storage and analysis (MATLAB, Python, etc.). They will be expected to provide effective communication of results and design parameters to teams as well as contributing to publications, presentations, and posters.

The Research and Development Engineer provides guidance regarding experimental design and testing strategies, works in collaboration with lab engineers to design and fabricate experimental set-ups, executes mechanical tests, performs data analysis, and creates results summaries for research studies, including those related to fracture fixation, tendon and ligament repair, soft tissue injury evaluation, cartilage and bone tissue engineering, and screw biomechanics.

Additionally, the Research and Development Engineer will share responsibility for maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment, ensuring adequate adherence to safety regulations, managing laboratory support and the maintenance of laboratory record. Duties include:

  • Design and develop complex and specialized equipment, instruments, or systems; coordinate detailed phases of work related to responsibility for part of a major project or for an entire project of moderate scope.
  • Develop technical and methodological solutions to complex engineering/scientific problems requiring independent analytical thinking and advanced knowledge.
  • Develop creative new or improved equipment, materials, technologies, processes, methods, or software important to the advancement of the field.
  • Contribute technical expertise, and perform basic research and development in support of programs/projects; act as advisor/consultant in area of specialty.
  • Contribute to portions of published articles or presentations; prepare and write reports; draft and prepare scientific papers.
  • Provide technical direction to other research staff, engineering associates, technicians, and/or students, as needed.

  • Advanced degree in mechanical/biomechanical engineering or related field.
  • Proficiencies with 3D CAD software (Fusion 360 or SOLIDWORKS preferred), MATLAB, Microsoft Office, and a computer programming language.
  • Fabrication/prototyping experience.


Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of engineering and related natural sciences.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.


  • Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
