Bachelor’s degree.
Experience as an academic advisor in a college setting.
Evidence of attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree or graduate level coursework.
Experience in academic advising at Texas State University.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Knowledge of Texas State University policies and procedures, including those related to curriculum, core curriculum, financial aid and other academic compliance tasks.
Professional accomplishments such as publications, conference presentations, committee leadership, performance commendations, and awards.

Job Description:

The Student Development Specialist I (SDS I) has primary responsibility for curriculum, compliance, and special projects (50%) while serving as an academic advisor for PACE students, prospective students, and their families (50%). SDS I project responsibilities typically include serving as a liaison to select academic colleges and university departments, executing academic compliance tasks, and serving as a curriculum and academic advising specialist for PACE Academic Advising staff.

Job Duties:

Serve as a liaison to select academic colleges and university departments, contributing to building positive relationships and tracking all curricular changes within each Texas State program of study.
Act as a curriculum and academic advising specialist for academic advising staff.
Provide regular professional development for academic advising staff regarding curriculum and related topics.
Audit records and academic advising to ensure quality and compliance.
Assist with programming and outreach to contribute to higher persistence and retention rates.
Execute compliance tasks related to areas such as curriculum, core curriculum, financial aid, and ROTC.
Assist PACE students in the major exploration process.
Guide students in the completion of admissions requirements for majors.
Assist students with course schedules and selection of courses for each semester.
Recognize and address the needs and concerns of a diverse student population.
Assist students in interpreting degree audit reports, transcripts, and complex academic policies. Perform complicated calculations such as grade point average and completion rate calculations.
Provide referrals to other offices and services on campus.
Maintain confidential student files and records by keeping accurate and thorough documentation of all advising interactions.
Provide general information and outstanding customer service to prospective students, parents, and other members of the public.
Participate in university recruitment and retention efforts.
Provide data regarding the number of students advised and other information as requested.
Participate in New Student Orientation.
Conduct presentations.
Provide clerical and administrative assistance.
Perform other duties as assigned.
(Normal working hours are M-F 8-5, but some night/weekend work is required for participation in events such as Bobcat Days.)
