The Department of Pathology at University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Specialist or Laboratory Specialist Intermediate. This position is located in the NIH-funded Hematology Research lab of Adam N. Goldfarb, M.D. and will involve participation in team-based development of novel therapeutic approaches. The relevant projects have been supported by long-term NIH funding and have resulted in several prominent publications.

Responsibilities of the position include:

Design, execution, documentation and interpretation of experiments in hematology research. Execution of complex experimental procedures with appropriate controls. Assessment of relevant literature and proposal of new experiments. Development and refinement of research protocols. Data obtained from experiments are expected to be used for publications and grant applications. Scientific interaction with department members and members of outside institutions. Participation in meetings. Provision of technical guidance and assistance to students and junior lab members. Logistical support for laboratory activities.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Laboratory Specialist:

Education: Bachelor's degree in related science.

Experience: At least three years of experience is preferred. Master's degree in related field may substitute for required experience.

Laboratory Specialist Intermediate:

Education: Bachelor's degree in related science.

Experience: At least six years of experience. Master's degree in related field may substitute for required experience. Nine years of experience accepted in lieu of degree. Mice breeding experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
