Facilities Management at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for our highly regarded Apprenticeship Program. The Apprenticeship Program began in 1982 and was the first Apprenticeship Program initiated by a state agency. This unique program provides an opportunity to learn a trade while working full time at UVA. Apprentices support Facilities Management's goal of providing consistent, cost effective, efficient, and reliable maintenance and service to the University’s facilities. These employees are trained through the apprenticeship program with the goal of becoming skilled in carpentry or masonry.

Apprentices obtain essential skills regarding workplace safety in the construction and maintenance environment, and identification and use of tools and equipment, as well as developing behavioral competencies. During training, apprentices gain foundational knowledge across the trades of carpentry and masonry. Apprentices learn through a combination of on-the-job training, technical education, and classroom instruction. The University underwrites the cost for all training, tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), and uniforms.

Apprentices are required to attend mandatory online classes and virtual meetings and must have a minimum of a B average in all classroom instruction. Training consists of rotations in Facilities Management departments throughout the University; including maintenance, repair, new construction, utilities, and industrial systems to equip apprentices with a broad range of skills to support University construction and maintenance needs. All training and supplemental courses are fully paid for by the University of Virginia.

Selected apprentice candidates are hired into a two-year restricted position. Those who meet outlined milestones for the program will be eligible for a second two-year restricted term to complete the apprentice program. There is no guarantee of continued employment after the first two years. Candidates of the program will be provided quarterly assessments and evaluated annually as to their performance. At the culmination of the second year, given a successful performance review, a determination will be made if and which of the trades (carpentry or masonry) is the best fit for the employee.

Working environment and conditions for apprentices include:

  • Mechanical spaces, exposure to a wide range of inside and outside temperatures, research labs, working from heights on ladders or scaffolding.
  • Physical demands such as, bending, squatting, stooping, climbing ladders, scaffolding and stairs, repetitive motion, and walking/standing on uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to carry tools and parts to perform work.

  • Performing all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations.
