Department Description:

Pediatric Dentistry is the clinical specialty for treatment of children, adolescents and special needs patients. This specialty requires a wide spectrum of knowledge, interests and skills applied for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of child and adolescent patients, as these patients represent dynamic beings undergoing changes in physical, mental and emotional growth. The Department of Pediatric Dentistry balances teaching, scholarship, patient care, research and professional service activities. Faculty are involved in didactic, pre-clinical, clinical, continuing education and extramural teaching. Students include dental and medical students, pediatric residents, public health master’s degree students and PhD students. The department has 10 full-time faculty, six salaried/compensated part-time faculty, over 70 adjunct faculty, 9 post-doctoral residents, 240 DDS students, 17 full-time, and 1 part-time SPA employees and several EPA non-faculty research staff, and an operating budget of approximately $2.5 million.

Position Description:

PEDIATRIC AND PUBLIC HEALTH IS RECRUITING FOR 4 DENTAL ASSISTANTS (00057683, 20025345, 00052440 & 00051449). BY APPLYING TO THIS POSITION YOU WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR ALL 4.

The Dental Assistant is expected to perform all required duties to assist in the provision of dental care to patients of Pediatric and Public Health. These duties include assisting pediatric dental residents, faculty, and DDS students in providing oral health care to patients; prepare the necessary equipment and supplies for the dental care in the Graduate clinic, Dental Faculty Practice, the UNC-CH Dental Clinic and operating room. Additionally, the Dental Assistant will be responsible for cleaning and stocking assigned operatory and patient care areas. This position will greet and prepare patients for the planned dental procedure and escort patients to various areas as required. This dental assistant will prepare and assign individual clinical schedule daily for the Graduate and DDS clinics, and Dental Faculty Practice.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalency and completion of an accredited dental assisting program; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Must have the skills and knowledge including basic knowledge of dental materials, instruments and dental radiology. Knowledge and skills of disease prevention, dental treatment and restorative procedures is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

DA II trained or equivalent

Prior experience in Pediatric Dentistry/Family Dentistry/Orthodontics. Two years experience as a dental assistant in North Carolina and fluency in Spanish a plus.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

BLS/PALS certified
