Department Description:

This position is in the Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health (CECMH), which provides clinical and rehabilitative services to persons with mental illness. The Center provides psychiatric and psychosocial assessment, medical management, case management, psychotherapy, family services and other community mental health services.

Position Description:

This position is to provide direct patient care in the community for individuals served by the Chatham Assertive Community Treatment Team in Chatham, Orange, and Durham counties. Psychiatric nursing is a vital part of this interdisciplinary team and responsibilities will include: working with other members of the team to develop, direct, and provide treatment, rehabilitation, and support services; managing the medication system in conjunction with the team’s psychiatric care providers to administer and document medication treatment; managing a secure medication room to support the dispensing of medications, which includes both oral and intramuscular medications for beneficiaries in need of such support; screening and monitoring clients for medical problems and side effects to medication; engaging in health promotion, prevention and education activities; developing strategies with individuals to maximize taking medications as prescribed; provide integrated care by communicating and coordinating services with other medical providers; and educating other staff members on the team from different disciplines in monitoring psychiatric symptoms and medication side-effects. Must have availability to participate in the team’s on-call rotation (being first to respond to mental health crises that arise for individuals served by the team during the week of 24/7 on call responsibility).

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Previous experience in a mental health setting. Skills and competence to establish trusting relationships with individuals and respect for their rights and personal preferences in treatment. Good communication skills and ability to work with other staff from a variety of professions in the health care field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience working with individuals diagnosed with serious and persistent mental illness. Working knowledge of psychiatric medications and side effects to those medications. Previous employment on an ACT team.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina. Must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
