Position Description:
The Director of Strategic Communications serves as the communications, media relations, public relations and marketing professional for the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) at UCLA. A direct report to the CNSI Senior Director, the Director of Strategic Communications works collaboratively to devise and then implement communications and marketing strategies for the Institute and its programs. As part of the CNSI Communications team, the Director focuses on three key areas: 1) Strategic Communications, 2) Public Relations and Marketing and 3) Multimedia, Publications and Production. The Director provides strategic planning and implementation of comprehensive internal and external communications efforts and establishes objectives and work plans, and collaborative projects with team members.

The Director also participates in the overall planning, execution and dissemination of CNSI programs and initiatives in the areas of research, technology centers, entrepreneurship and education in a fashion which promotes the Institute's goals for interaction. This includes support towards research activities, technology center, education and entrepreneurial program activities. The Director will establish a budget for each project, complying with restrictions. The Director will work in an integrated manner tethering together the needs of CNSI leadership, faculty, staff and stakeholders while maintaining a strong focus on the CNSI Mission, initiatives and best practices in stewardship and fiscal responsibility.

The Director is responsible for managing, preparing, administering, and directing resources. Reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs. Develops, modifies, and executes policies that affect immediate operations. This position also acts in a supervisory capacity to the CNSI Communications Manager and contracted science writers.
