Assistant Project Scientist -Theoretical AMO and Condensed Matter Physics - Department of Physics

The Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Project Scientist to work in the area of theoretical AMO and condensed matter physics, specifically in the area of numerical simulations based on quantum Monte Carlo, high temperature superconductivity, nematic quantum criticality, topological phases of matter, and strongly correlated quantum materials. This full-time (100%) position is for one year in duration, with an expected start date in Spring/ Summer 2021.

The position will be in the group of Professor Norman Yao, in the Physics Department, University of California, Berkeley. The group's research interests lie at the interface between atomic, molecular and optical physics, condensed matter, and quantum information science. In particular, recent projects have focused on realizing non-equilibrium phases of matter, understanding the dynamics of quantum thermalization and measuring the intrinsic properties of topological phases.

The job duties and responsibilities of this position entail performing numerical simulations of strongly-correlated systems, collaborating with experimental groups to understand and analyze measurements, oversight and mentorship of students working in related areas, and the writing and preparation of papers.

Basic qualifications (must be met at the time of application):
Ph.D. or equivalent international degree.

Additional qualifications (must be met by the start date of the job):
Five years of work experience post Ph.D.

Preferred qualifications:
Expertise in numerical techniques such as quantum Monte Carlo simulations, the density matrix renormalization group, Krylov subspace methods; expertise in understanding experimental data (e.g. heat capacity, dielectric properties, magneto-transport etc.); expertise in topological phases of matter; expertise in strongly correlated systems.

Salary and Benefits:
