Postdoctoral Scholar - Alzheimer's Disease

Job description

University of California Irvine

Postdoctoral Scholar - Alzheimer's Disease

The laboratory of Dr. Daniele Piomelli is seeking a qualified candidate to participate in an NIH-funded project aimed at determining the role played by an important but poorly understood enzyme of lipid signaling in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will independently focus on: (1) expressing the human and mouse orthologues of this enzyme in an appropriate system and developing a low-throughput LC/MS-based assay to measure its activity in vitro; (2) testing novel inhibitors in vitro and optimizing new leads by iterative structure-activity relationship analyses (the chemistry is run by separate researchers); (3) testing novel inhibitors in neuronal cell cultures and in animal models of AD; and (4) presenting research materials in written, graphic and oral formats.

The ideal candidate is proficient in a biochemistry/molecular biology wet lab and has demonstrated expertise in molecular pharmacology. Interest in and/or expertise on lipid pharmacology would be a plus. A PhD or MD degree is required.

For the last 30 years the Piomelli lab has been at the forefront of research on the endocannabinoid system and other lipid-derived signaling complexes. Its highly diverse, multidisciplinary environment offers extraordinary opportunities for growth to highly motivated individuals.

Qualified candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information of three references for full consideration.
