Position Summary:

The Director of Regional Advancement, VA is a leader on the regional fundraising team in the Office of Advancement at William & Mary.
The Director is a fundraising generalist, soliciting and stewarding gifts benefiting any/all of William & Mary’s schools and programs; their duties include major gift fundraising and prospect qualification and engagement with W&M alumni and friends of the university.
The Director reports to the Executive Director of Regional Advancement and works closely with colleagues on the regional team as well as internal partners in Advancement, including other regional and unit development professionals, colleagues on the communications, events, stewardship, alumni engagement, and annual giving teams, as well as staff and faculty partners on campus.
The Director is expected to develop a robust major gift portfolio of 125-150 donors by the end of their second year in the position, with gifts totaling $1 million+ annually. In addition to annual dollars raised, performance goals include activity/move measures as well as the number of prospects identified and qualified for major gift potential.
The Director will ideally work and live in the Richmond-Virginia Beach corridor. The Regional team has a dedicated office in Williamsburg and has historically worked in that space. Until current staff travel restrictions due to the pandemic are lifted, the entire team is teleworking.

Required Qualifications:

•Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and or experience.

•Understanding of and desire to work in philanthropy in higher education and make an impact on the future of higher education.
•Experience (typically 7+ years) managing and developing relationships with constituents, clients, customers, in a for profit on nonprofit setting. Examples include outside sales, marketing or public relations, financial planning or wealth management, admissions or enrollment, and membership development, as well as academic fundraising or alumni engagement.
•The ability and desire to set and exceed aggressive goals.
•Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with fluency in using persuasive language to promote visionary opportunities.
•An entrepreneurial spirit, independence and the ability and desire to work effectively and successfully with minimal supervision.
•A strong work ethic, integrity and commitment to teamwork, with the willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues.
•Strong organizational skills and an ability to successfully handle multiple and complex tasks and projects concurrently.

Preferred Qualifications:

•An Advanced Degree (preferably a Master’s degree) in higher education administration, business, or another field.
•Progressively responsible experience (typically 7+ years) managing and developing relationships with constituents, clients, or customers, in a for profit or nonprofit setting. Examples include outside sales, marketing or public relations, financial planning or wealth management, admissions or enrollment, and membership development, as well as academic fundraising or alumni engagement.
•An appreciation for and/or connection to William & Mary, its mission, history and unique focus on undergraduate research and a liberal arts education.
•A curious nature and interest in lifelong learning.
•The desire and ability to innovate and implement dynamic change.
•The desire and ability to exceed goals.
•The desire and ability to build consensus among colleagues.
