HEAD, AREA STUDIES CATALOGING LIBRARIAN

ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN OR ASSOCIATE LIBRARIAN

The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries seek knowledgeable, innovative, dynamic, service-oriented librarian to provide leadership for Area Studies Cataloging, one of five sections in the Cataloging department. 

Responsibilities:

Reporting to Head of Cataloging, will: direct, coordinate, manage activities of Area Studies Cataloging, including hiring, supervision, evaluation of two librarians and five FTE classified staff; answer questions concerning cataloging and resolve complex cataloging problems; monitor national and international cataloging standards and trends and adapt local policies and processes appropriately; write and maintain relevant cataloging and training documentation; explore, plan, implement, evaluate projects and innovative procedures to address cataloging needs, improve efficiency, and enhance user services; collaborate with other Technical Services managers on planning and problem resolution; serve as  Cataloging liaison to Area Studies collection librarians; create full-level original bibliographic records, including vernacular script fields, for Area Studies languages materials, with focus on Slavic materials; perform associated name, series and subject authority control work and participate in the Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO); contribute to developments in field of metadata/cataloging through active professional engagement and research; promote Libraries’ culture of diversity and inclusion, support values outlined in the Libraries’ Diversity Strategic Plan (https://libraries.indiana.edu/file/diversity-strategic-plan-20162017pdf).

Qualifications

Required: ALA-accredited graduate degree in library or information science or international equivalent; candidates with advanced degree in relevant subject area and appropriate experience in an academic setting will also be considered; minimum two years  relevant professional experience in original cataloging; ability to effectively manage workflows, projects, and people; demonstrated working knowledge of  MARC21, Resource Description and Access (RDA), and the Library of Congress classification and subject headings; understanding of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC),and its national programs for shared bibliographic (BIBCO) and authority records (NACO and SACO); evidence of effective planning, document writing, implementation of cataloging policies or projects; language skills and cultural knowledge to accurately describe, provide authorized access points, and assign subject headings for materials in Russian and other Slavic languages; excellent oral and written communication skills in English; ability to meet requirements of a tenure-track position at the IU Libraries (https://libraries.indiana.edu/file/promotion-and-tenure-criteria-iub-librarians-pdf).

Preferred: two years or more successful experience in management position; experience with OCLC and substantial level of experience with integrated library systems.
