(Job ID, 228071) The Associate Director of University Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Affairs is responsible for fostering a culture of success and a commitment to graduate student and postdoctoral success by developing and improving programming aimed at promoting the social and personal development of graduate students at the University of Rochester. With considerable independence and wide latitude for judgement, the Associate Director provides general oversight to graduate students referred to the CARE network and University Student Services, creates and implements population level and targeted programs designed to address challenges commonly faced by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, coordinates student life programming across graduate school units, and utilizes a data-driven approach to identify challenges and opportunities in graduate student support and recommends changes to programs, policies, or practices.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

University Graduate Student Support Manager

Serve as a lead consultant in utilizing and operating the CARE Network for graduate students. Serve as case manager responsible for connecting students who have been identified as needing support through an online CARE database system with resources necessary to support them. This includes:

  • Responsible for managing all graduate student cases in the online CARE database system
  • Coordinate the CARE professionals across the academic units serving graduate students
  • Responsible for collaborating with the CARE director and staff serving the undergraduate student population
  • Create and maintain online graduate student profiles and case files related to student follow up.
  • Report incidents related to student code of conduct, Title IX, Policy 106 and related incidents to the University Judicial Officer, University Counsel and Title IX Director in a timely manner.
  • Create marketing and informational materials, brochures and promotions to increase usage of graduate support services and community access and collaboration.
  • Serve as the primary contact for DPS and UCC regarding graduate students
  • Work closely with University Counseling Center, Disability Services, Ombudspersons, and cross-school partners to develop and implement support and wellness programs for graduate students in the university community.
  • Interface with the University Judicial Officer and the student code of conduct regarding conduct policies, procedures, and adjudication with respect to the graduate student population.
  • Serve on University committees related to graduate student support management
  • Attend local and national trainings and conferences to enhance student support/response expertise and impart graduate community with new tools and resources.

Mentoring and Professionalism for Graduate Students 

  • In consultation with administrators and faculty, create and implement policies and practices regarding mentoring of graduate students that support graduate student training and improves graduate student experiences within the unique cultures of the graduate schools at the University of Rochester.
  • Coordinate with the Office of Equity and Inclusion as well as school specific offices dedicated to supporting diverse graduate student learners.
  • Coordinate with university/community organizations and offices including (Career Services, Office of Faculty Development, Title IX, Policy 106, etc.) to offer programming that will contribute to best practices in advising and mentoring graduate learners.
  • Support UR staff and faculty involved with students of concern through workshops, presentations, and consultation when needed.
  • Collaborate with professional development staff and administrators across the graduate schools.

Student Engagement 

  • Serves as an advisor to the Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow University Advisory Council and other graduate student groups on leadership development, program planning, group process concerns, budgets, and University policy.
  • Serves as a liaison to the Postdoctoral Association
  • Work closely with the Vice Provost and University Dean of Graduate Education to develop strategy and vision for student engagement programming to enhance our pipeline of future engaged alumni and donors.
  • Plan and execute programming and events at the University level for graduate students (e.g., commencement, graduate student appreciation week, orientation, Meliora Weekend).

Planning & Assessment 

  • Assist the Vice Provost of Graduate Education with strategic planning and assessment of student services and graduate student life at the University of Rochester. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Review trends related to student support needs on a bi- annual basis and recommending changes to policies, processes and procedures to fit the current climate.
    • Consult with graduate school administrators and deans to illuminate student support needs aligned with best practices and the unique cultures of each school.
    • Review and grow network of graduate student resources on campus and in the community to accommodate growing and changing needs of student population.
    • Being active in regional, state and national professional organizations pertinent to the field.
  • Identify trends and correlations with graduate student surveys.
  • Disseminate data reports to appropriate audiences on an annual or biannual basis (i.e. deans & administration, University Council on Graduate Education).

Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters in counseling, higher education or related fields required.

Doctoral degree in related fields preferred.

Two or more years of experience in a college or university setting in student affairs required.

Experience working with graduate students and diverse populations preferred.

Required:

  • Effective communicator both written and verbal.
  • Ability to handle high-stress situations, streamlining support with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships in a university environment.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated ability to implement programs and policies around student success
