Department Description:

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, founded in 1975, is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the country. The Center’s mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and the nation through research, treatment, training and outreach.

This research laboratory serves the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in support of primarily animal models research. The Pathology Services Core (PSC) has three major functions: Service, Research, and Training. The staff of the PSC support these goals by providing high quality histology services, by consultation in experimental plans, and by training of investigators in histologic techniques. Research and development to improve laboratory procedures is ongoing and insures availability of state of the art services. In addition, the laboratory performs customized services that are not readily available in the private sector.

Position Description:

The Research Specialist will become familiar with all aspects of working in the Pathology Services Core (PSC). They will perform both routine and non-routine histology testing including all aspects of Histotechnology. They will work with the client, when necessary, on the details of his/her project to maximize the amount of information obtained from the histology. The specialist will assist in the research and development of new methods and tasks. The specialist will perform both routine and non-routine histology testing including all aspects of Histotechnology. The individual may be required to train and assist in the techniques of immunohistochemistry.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Histology experience is required. This experience includes embedding, microtome sectioning, and special staining. Position requires constant attention to detail. General laboratory experience is mandatory, with emphasis on handling chemicals. Familiarity with animal physiology and tissue identification is also required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s-level in a biology-related discipline. Strong communication skills, ability to work independently and work with others, and command of written and spoken English are indispensable.
