Department Description:

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is one of the largest basic science departments in the School of Medicine. The department has multiple missions: teaching, research and service to the State. The department trains PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows to become future scientists, researchers and faculty. We teach undergraduate courses that train medical students, dental, pharmacology, and nursing students in the basics of immunology and microbiology/bacteriology. The students go on to become physicians, dentist, pharmacists and nurses. All faculty integral to our teaching program are full members of the department. Joint faculty, especially from clinical departments, augment these efforts. Our research mission is what makes us a unique organization.

Our ability to ask and answer questions of biological and clinical relevance is extraordinary. This is enhanced by our clinical faculty located in the hospital and the collection of joint faculty who are medical doctors. The research interests of the department also overlaps significantly with other programs on campus, and many of our faculty are affiliated with these programs. We have important and close interactions with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Curriculum in Genetics, Program in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Thurston Bowles Arthritis Center and the Neuroscience Center. The service mission to the state is carried out in a variety of ways and that includes principally the supervision of the clinical microbiology and immunology labs. Unusual among medical school faculty who supervise clinical bacteriology, virology, mycology and immunology, all have primary academic appoints in the department.
