Duties and Responsibilities:

Loyola University Chicago is committed to environmental sustainability, having transformed its campuses to meet energy, water, and waste efficiencies that have consistently ranked the University in the top 5% of green campuses nationally. The School of Environmental Sustainability (SES) serves 380 undergraduate and 70 graduate students, and is housed within a state-of-the-art geothermally heated/cooled building complex containing a 3,100 sq ft greenhouse, two aquaponics facilities, a biodiesel production facility, teaching & research labs, environmental analytical lab, ecotoxicology lab, and a green dormitory. The campus prioritizes sustainability with energy efficient LEED certified buildings, permeable pavement, green roof installations, and student-run urban gardens supplying the LUC Farmer’s Market. The Loyola University Retreat & Ecology Campus (LUREC) has a wetland restoration project in a 20-acre wetland, a 5-acre organic farm, and is a venue for three-week summer field courses and for faculty and student research in sustainable agriculture, ecology, and wetland restoration. For more information about SES, please see our website.

The School of Environmental Sustainability seeks an enthusiastic and experienced Director of Strategy and Planning to work directly with the Dean on high-level special projects. The Director of Strategy & Planning is a full time, professional, exempt administrative position within the SES, reporting to the SES Dean, and stationed in the SES building at the Lakeshore campus. The successful candidate will possess a high level of administrative experience and technical expertise and be able to envision the necessary steps to achieve a desired end-product for special projects. This work will, with some projects, require coordinating efforts of other SES employees. The overall duties of this position will include directly assisting the Dean with strategy, planning and implementation of multiple large-scale special projects. During the next several years while the SES is expected to double in size, change-management will be the most important component of this position. Examples of managing for change include coordinating the development of an SES governance structure (coordinating the development and group-composition of SES charters, by-laws, committee structures, etc.) and an SES Operational structure (as the faculty in the school define Affinity Groups and their roles) with the Dean and faculty committees. Another example of a special project includes coordinating a project SES is leading for the Vatican which builds a roadmap and guide for Catholic and Jesuit Universities worldwide to develop a plan for the 7-year Laudato Si’ Challenge. Necessary soft skills possessed by the successful candidate include the ability to work with the Dean to coordinate meetings with the faculty that solicit input on School-level processes; following-up with cordial, informative and accurate communications; and managing expectations while inspiring toward a goal. Technical skills necessary for this position include content management of portions of the SES website to maintain accurate updates and communications; website coding and designing for the SES environmental science online textbook Healing Earth project; managing the written input on documents in group fora such as Sharepoint and Google docs; filing school-level documents on OneDrive; developing and designing occasional communications for the Dean including PowerPoint and modest video presentations.
