Job Summary

Departmental Assistant will prepare stimuli and software for experiments, collect behavioral and fMRI data from human subjects, perform statistical analyses of the data, and write up the results. Some administrative duties within the Lab will include participant recruitment, collecting fMRI and behavioral session data, and preparing/managing IRB protocols, and Report to the PI and/or graduate students and postdoctoral researchers working in the Lab.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare experiments investigating emotion and cognitive control across the lifespan, including the preparation of stimuli and experimental tasks, development and monitoring of fMRI protocols.
  • Data collection either through direct administration of the experiment to participants, including informed consent procedures, or by mentoring undergraduate research assistants who will administer the experiment
  • Basic fMRI data analysis using Freesurfer, FSL, CONN toolbox, and Excel to be learned on the job
  • Maintenance of participants’ records, recruiting participants for paid experiments, and serving as the contact person for potential participants
  • Administrative duties within the Lab, for example including maintenance and storage of consent forms, recruitment and supervision of undergraduate research assistants, and preparation of figures and proofreading papers and presentation materials
  • Basic statistical analyses of the data using the R and SPSS to be learned on the job
  • Write reports of the experimental procedures and statistical results

    • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
    • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.

    Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

    • Experience collecting behavioral data, and the ability to work cooperatively in a research setting with student and non-student researchers.
    • Experience with collection of fMRI data and basic familiarity with fMRI data analysis software, e.g., FSL, freesurfer, CONN toolbox.
    • Familiarity with scripting in linux.
    • Proficiency in word processing and Excel programs.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively and work productively in establishing and maintaining harmonious working relationships with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students.

    Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

    • Bachelors degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, or related field preferred.
    • Prior experience in a research lab investigating emotion and cognitive control, neuroscience/fMRI, and/or aging preferred.

    Additional Details

    This person will learn how to:

  • Ability to coordinate experiments and perform data analysis
  • Familiarity with the background literature
  • Proficiency in the analysis of fMRI data using a variety of free and commercial software platforms.
  • Proficiency in producing scientific reports of the experiments and results
  • Basic statistical analyses in SPSS and R
  • Work Schedule

    40 hours per week

    Salary Information

    $14.00 per hour

    Temporary position: 5/10/2021 -5/07/2022
