Position Summary:

Oversees the effective operation of the Department of Public Safety (DPS), assists with the development of Student Life policies, Language School student policies and College emergency response procedures and training. Under the Director’s guidance, DPS will deliver safety services which includes the development, implementation, and administration of programs that assist the campus community in responding to emergencies and/or improving the personal safety and wellbeing of the students, faculty, staff, guests, and property of the College.

Essential Functions:

Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.

•Provides vision, leadership, and direction to DPS.
•Works cooperatively with all members of the College community and accepts direction from supervisors.
•Fosters a culture of campus safety prioritizing the mental and physical wellness of all community members, and specifically recognizes the experiences of traditionally marginalized portions of the community.
•Oversees and manages DPS, and its 24-hour operations.
•Facilitates the development of short- and long-term plans to meet the needs of the College community, including a community culture of collective responsibility.
•Facilitates and oversees the integration of DPS services into the campus community and proactively promotes positive relations by including community involvement in the affairs of DPS.
•Identifies and facilitates programs for community development and training, including de-escalation and first-aid training.
•Administers the budget and makes recommendations for DPS facilities, equipment, personnel, and operational needs.
•Hires, supervises, evaluates, and manages department staff.
•Assures commitment and compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations (example: CLERY), College rules and regulations and department policies by all department members.
•Oversees and manages department policy development and implementation.
•Assures cooperation with all College departments to coordinate events and safety programs.
•Oversees the management and confidentiality of all applicable records.
•Oversees the parking control plan and parking enforcement.
•Supports emergency management planning and oversees the execution of the College emergency response procedures.
•Works closely with the Center for Health and Wellness to support policy creation and response protocols for student physical and mental health emergencies.
•Assures the completion of necessary reports and the dissemination of pertinent information to applicable persons, departments, and agencies.
•Assists in the development of student life and language school student policies and handbook materials.
•Collaborates with Residential Life, Health and Wellness, the Office of Community Standards, and other bodies on the enforcement of safety regulations, and College rules and policies utilizing equitable, non-punitive and restorative methods.
•Collaborates with the campus community to problem solve and resolve conflicts.
•Coordinates the fire safety program with department staff and other College personnel.
•Acts as the liaison between DPS, the College and various law enforcement and service agencies (including, but not limited to, police, fire, rescue, etc).

General Responsibilities:

•Oversees and administers the applicable policies and procedures to best ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff.
•Oversees and administers the applicable policies and procedures to best ensure the security of College property.
•Administers protocols to ensure compliance with all applicable College, local, state and federal laws and regulations.
•As a member of the Risk Office management team, takes part in a participatory management process. Works with all members of the team to create an efficient and effective work environment.
•Maintains flexibility and willingness to contribute to resolution of problems.
•Performs other related duties as required.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in an area of administration.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

•Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to address community needs and ensure the safety and well-being of all community members.
•Must be well-versed in safety requirements and applicable laws (e.g.: CLERY, Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, etc.)
•Demonstrated knowledge of community-centered approaches to safety.
•Proficient in use of standard computer applications.
•Must pass extensive background investigation.

Experience:

•Demonstrated organizational management and staff professional development, supervisory and budgetary experience required.
•Proven record of leadership, strong interpersonal skills and/or experience in counseling/training.
•Must have worked in a diverse environment with preferred experience at an academic institution.
•Familiarity with a health and wellness-based approach to community safety.
•Familiarity with de-escalation strategies required and restorative practices preferred.
•A demonstrated dedication to fostering a culture of antiracism with preferred experience integrating diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism efforts into campus safety.
