The University of Virginia seeks an experienced Senior Director of Development. Reporting to the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Development, the Senior Director will play a leadership role in coordinating fundraising for multiple central fundraising units.

The Senior Director will oversee the fundraising teams for Student Affairs, University Arts, Parent Giving, the Contemplative Sciences Center, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. They will play a key role in guiding the fundraising units to meet individual and overall campaign goals within the University’s Honor the Future campaign. Partnering with the AVP and directors, the incumbent will ensure everyone works strategically, collaboratively, and efficiently internally and externally. The Senior Director will lead efforts to organize and hire for key fundraising positions and will supervise five director-level positions.


  • Oversee fundraising teams focused on pan-University and unit-based fundraising priorities.

  • Build strong working relationships with academic leaders to design, support, and assess implementation of comprehensive unit-based fundraising programs.

  • Coach and manage the performance of chief development officers, helping them reach campaign goals for their assigned units.

  • Build and manage a portfolio of current and prospective major- and principal-gift level donors, moving them towards giving levels that achieve annual and long-range fundraising goals for the University

  • Coordinate prospect strategy and communication across a highly decentralized and complex advancement structure.

  • Play a critical role in maximizing philanthropic support from key donors to ultimately achieve, or exceed, ambitious campaign goals.

  • Serve as a member of the senior leadership team in the University Development Office and maintain strong and meaningful relationships with advancement colleagues and leaders across Grounds.

  • Travel regionally and nationally to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects.

  • Lead and motivate staff.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Eights years of relevant experience.

  • Ability to travel domestically with occasional evening and weekend work.

  • Valid Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Prior experience in non-profit or higher education fundraising and with staffing senior leaders and volunteers.

  • Direct portfolio and performance management experience as well as campaign planning experience, particularly within a higher education setting.

  • Track record of achieving sustained growth in a university, non-profit organization, or other relevant sector.

  • Exceptional communication skills, a high degree of personal integrity and the ability to keep the big picture in focus while attending to the small details.

  • Experience using data to evaluate and plan.
