The University of Virginia Office of Engagement is currently seeking an Associate Director of School and Center Engagement. The position coordinates the creation and growth of programming for alumni and friends with partner schools and centers at the University of Virginia. Through ongoing communication, coordination, and management of events, the Associate Director will help launch new programs and strengthen partnerships, working across multiple functions spanning program design and administrations.

The Associate Director is responsible for executing the strategic vision for school and center engagement. In partnership with the Senior Director, the Associate Director will set and manage plans for across Grounds engagement. This includes, but is not limited to, planning and implementing events, organizing communication to alumni and UVA constituents, working with alumni volunteers, and serving as a liaison with partner schools and centers.


  • Design and implement engagement programs to advance partner schools and centers' goals to achieve a defined purpose.

  • Support partner schools in alumni engagement through special events.

  • Use a combination of strategic planning, operations, and administration skills to drive program development and success.

  • Evaluate new opportunities based on a variety of factors and project manage their development.

  • Lead new programs through their early phases to completion.

  • Collaborate across the schools, centers, and programs at UVA.

  • Build networks of relationships among internal and external stakeholders to identify promising new program opportunities.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with at least one year of experience, in previous role(s) where volunteer/student/alumni programming, strategic planning, and/or marketing/communication were primary duties.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse constituents.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Desktop Publishing.

  • Must exhibit strong strategic planning and implementation skills and must be able to lead efforts in setting priorities and meeting goals. In addition to the ability to speak persuasively in public, they must be an effective leader with the ability to work across Grounds and towards shared goals.

  • Ability to travel with frequent overnight and some weekend work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of experience working with volunteer management, strategic planning, program management, and/or student/alumni engagement.

  • Experience with changes in organizational behavior and the implementation of new structures.

Evening and weekend hours are involved, and the ability to travel when permitted. The position travels 20-25% of the time. This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require the ability to travel some distance to attend meetings and programs.
