Part-Time Lecturer (Choral Music)

General Summary

The EMU School of Music & Dance in the College of Arts and Sciences is actively accepting applications for a Part-Time Lecturer of Choral Music. The successful candidate will be the de facto Associate Director of Choral Activities. This is a renewable contract based on review and is an excellent position for a choral artist building a portfolio appropriate to tenure track university teaching. Mentorship of graduate students who serve in the assistant conductor positions is a portion of the responsibilities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Teach courses in the choral area as available, such as;

Conduct EMU Vision

Formerly known as Women’s Choir

40-50 member SSA Choral ensemble focused on using music to promote equity and justice.

Fall and Winter Semesters

Rehearsals MWF 4-5 PM

Master’s in Conducting or Music Education minimum qualification to teach this course

Conduct EMU Voices

New SSA auditioned chamber ensemble focused on the highest choral standard possible

16-24 voices are required for this section to be available.

Fall & Winter Semester

Rehearsals MWF 1-3 PM

Master’s in Conducting or Music Education minimum qualification to teach this course

Teach Undergraduate Choral Conducting

Conducting MM required qualification

Fall Semester only

Class meeting time: MW 10:00

Master’s in Conducting minimum qualification to teach this course

Teach Undergraduate Choral Methods

2-4 years secondary experience required qualification

Winter Semester only

Class meeting time: MW(T)F 9-11

Master’s in Conducting or Music Education and 3-years public school teaching minimum qualification to teach this course

Qualifications

Earned doctorate in conducting is preferred; a master’s degree in conducting or music education is required. Choral teaching at the secondary level for a minimum of 3 years is required.


The successful candidate will demonstrate:

A positive, enthusiastic passion for the choral arts.

A refined communicative conducting gesture.

Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.

A commitment to employing music to build empathy and equity across race, gender, varying abilities, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, class, or religious perspectives

The successful candidate will maintain professional visibility as a conductor, artist, scholar, and participant with American Choral Directors Association & Michigan School Vocal Music Association. It is desired that the successful candidate will actively seek close relationships with music educators throughout the state and actively participate in recruitment and mentoring of students and program-building initiatives.

URL web links to videos—recent recordings, conductor facing the camera. Videos should provide a frontal view of the candidate’s gestures, roughly 20 minutes of conducting, including some rehearsal footage and some performance quality.
