Primary Function:

Reporting to the Director for Residential Life, the Area Coordinator will have responsibility for establishing a respectful, welcoming, safe, and collegial tone in a group of undergraduate residential facilities.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and vision to create, foster, and lead campus-wide initiatives that will assist new students with their transition into college through working with faculty and residential life staff members in the planning and implementation of educational programs outside of the classroom that will facilitate student success.
  • Assist in the supervision of area proctors and lead proctors.
  • Serve on the CARE team and offer support to students with on-going difficulties.
  • Work with others in the division of student life on issues such as academic integration, balance of student involvement, ethical behavior, and overall integration into the Sewanee community.
  • Assist with and participate in various initiatives to help students transition from the admissions process to matriculation.
  • Collaborate with other Area Coordinators, Head Residents, Head Proctors, Lead Proctors, and Proctors who serve in a student support capacity to create a similar and consistent experience in each of the 19 traditional residence halls and special interest houses.
  • Serve in an on-call capacity with other staff members in residential life, support the Deans of Students by helping to enforce college policies, encourag the leadership development of the student residential life staff, report maintenance and facility issues in the buildings, prepare the residence halls for the opening and closing of each semester, and help uphold the residential, social, and academic traditions of the University, including attending major events.
  • Develop specific programmatic areas according to the needs of the division and students.
  • Full time residence in undergraduate residence hall; active presence as a member of the residential community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Judgment Required:

Judgment and discretion as to the use of established policies are required to perform the essential duties of this position.

Budgetary Responsibility:

Monitors expenditures against budget; prepares budget data for review/approval by supervisor/department head.

Machines & Equipment Used:

Must be able to drive university vans; lift up to 35 pounds and move equipment with care and caution for event set up.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree. Masters preferred.

Experience:

Experience in educational programming, demonstrated leadership experience in higher education, and previous facilitation of group work. An interest in, or previous experience with, college-aged students is essential. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, organizational abilities, flexibility, and must exercise good judgment and indepedent problem-solving ability. Knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint required; website content management proficiency preferred. Pertinent residential experience and event planning experience preferred.

Daily contact with student residents, residential life student staff members, and students experiencing emergencies.

Supervision Received:

This position works with considerable independence and self-direction. Only general direction and scope of the work to be accomplished are discussed with supervisor.
