Job Description

The UM System Office of eLearning is welcoming applications for the role of an instructional designer to help design effective, high-quality learning experiences, and provide pedagogical and curricular consultation for online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced learning environments. The role is also responsible for planning, developing and delivering faculty professional development experiences on the topics of online teaching, online course design, and the effective use of technology in teaching. This position reports to the manager of instructional design and works in strong collaboration with other instructional designers, instructional developers, educational technologists and other staff in the Office of eLearning in support of department and institution-wide initiatives and projects.


  • Cultivates collaborative and professional working relationships with faculty, staff and administrators in assigned academic unit(s) and within the Office of eLearning
  • Assists in the development and implementation of educational support strategies and plans
  • Provides professional and timely support to faculty in the areas of pedagogy and educational technology
  • Helps facilitate consultations, workshops or other events in areas of instructional design and educational technology
  • Assists in preparing faculty for successful online teaching
  • Completes course quality reviews as assigned

This position is classified as an Instructional Designer II / GGS Grade 9

Salary Range: $40,498 - $56,940

Monday - Friday

8:00am - 5:00pm

Occasional weekend or evening hours as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related filed or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired
  • Conceptual knowledge of theories, practices, and procedures to designing online, hybrid, or technology enhanced instruction or curriculum in higher education or a related discipline
  • General knowledge of educational support techniques
  • Understanding of instructional design, including universal design
  • Some familiarity with technology toolbox of e-learning content development and assessment creation software
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Organized with demonstrated ability to prioritize and handle work time efficiently
  • Proactive mindset and solutions-oriented focus
  • Must demonstrate customer service, confidentiality, integrity, and a strong commitment to inclusion, diversity and equal opportunity in their activities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the Higher Education
  • Contributions with developing or helping to develop college-level online courses
  • Familiarity with accessibility requirements
  • Experience and skills related to developing interactive and engaging learning activities in online course
