Job Description:


The International Student FOCUS Program at Dean College is seeking a dynamic, experienced, student-centered educator to teach Composition I (ENG 111) and Communication Fundamentals (SPC 101) in-person, on campus during the fall semester. The FOCUS program is designed for international students entering college in the United States. The program combines cultural orientation, language instruction and individualized tutoring as well as academic classes to give the international student a holistic educational experience.


Composition I (ENG 111) is a 3-credit core requirement for all students designed to teach students composition skills needed at the college level. The specific section for international students meets for 4.5 contact hours per week and is designed to strengthen reading comprehension skills as well as sentence, paragraph, and essay writing abilities.


Communication Fundamentals (SPC 101) is also a 3-credit core requirement for all students. In this introductory hybrid communication course, students explore principles and practice of communication in interpersonal, small group, and public communication situations. The specific section for international students meets for 4.5 contact hours per week and is designed to help them improve their oral communication skills in English while building their interpersonal, small group, and public speaking skills. Listening, pronunciation, stress, and intonation skills may also be emphasized.


Both sections are being offered in an on-campus academic classroom, each meeting on Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays for 75-minutes per class section during the day. Again, each section meets for 4.5 contact hours per week, with a pay rate of $4800/section. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach. The program does provide a course charter with course objectives and outcomes, as well as the syllabi used by other instructors teaching the same courses in the program.



Requirements:


  • Master's degree in English, Rhetoric/Composition, Communication Studies, Interpersonal Communication, Business Communication, or related field is required. A PhD preferred;
  • ESL teaching experience required;
  • Strong computer skills, being able to navigate portals, utilize online resources, and utilize digital tools in responding to students is required;
  • Experience with or willingness to learn Canvas, our learning management system, and classroom media is required;
  • Experience teaching undergraduate students, experience teaching first and second year international students preferred;
  • Ideal candidate will possess expertise in learner-centered teachings and have the ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body that has a variety of learning styles.
