General Description:
The primary responsibility of a faculty member in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis shall be on good teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities to help the student develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become a better person, a better worker, and a better citizen. NOVA faculty may be assigned to any campus based upon enrollment and staffing needs.
Duties and Tasks:
This position is a 9-month teaching position for EMS courses at all levels, including Basic, Intermediate and Paramedic. Responsibilities will include developing and coordinating didactic and practical skill sessions according to National Standard Curriculum, conducting cognitive, psychomotor, and affective assessments, and managing various classroom activities pertaining to EMS education.
Essential Functions:
As a part of this primary responsibility, the College expects each faculty member to: meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; attend to assigned divisional and College duties; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations. Maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization and advise students.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications:Required KSAs:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; knowledge of lecture and laboratory demonstration of EMS subject matter at EMT, EMT-I, and EMT-P levels; knowledge of preparation and delivery of required course content for CoEMSP accredited program; ability to use instructional technologies. Excellent interpersonal and analytical skills; able to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in teaching field or associate’s degree in the teaching field with demonstrated competency in teaching field. Two (2) years of FT (or FT equivalent) related occupational experience. Qualifying degree must be awarded by a regionally accredited institution.
•Current National Registry Paramedic certification
•Current AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) provider certification
•Current AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider certification
•Current AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) provider certification
•At least one year of Basic and Advanced life support level EMS teaching experience
•Current licensure as a Registered Nurse with at least one year of Emergency Department experience
•AHA Instructor Certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS)
•At least two years of previous advanced life support level experience as a pre-hospital EMS provider.
•International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) or Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) Provider certification
•Current Virginia Office of EMS Education Coordinator certification
