POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

The Texas Tech University School of Music is welcoming nominations and applications for a tenure track Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Conducting and Director of Orchestral Studies. The search will remain open until filled, with service beginning in Fall 2021, Spring 2022, or Fall 2022. Review of applications will begin immediately. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in or potential to lead a university orchestra program, including evidence of or potential to engage in successful teaching, mentoring, and training of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Superior classical music conducting ability, and an active record of scholarship/practice that includes community engagement and/or collaboration.
  • Terminal or advanced degree in conducting or other closely related field, or relevant and equivalent professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of successful full-time orchestral conducting, teaching, and recruiting in a university program.
  • Superior skills and active record as a conductor in professional settings at national and international levels.
  • A record of peer-reviewed publication and/or peer-reviewed creative activity that has contributed to the discipline or field of study and to the candidate’s intellectual and artistic development.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students.
  • An ability to form partnerships within and outside of the university, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
  • A strong record of scholarship and/or creative activity supported by extramural funding and the demonstrated capacity or clear potential to bring externally sponsored research to Texas Tech University.

Duties Include:

  • Coordinate, guide and oversee all aspects of the orchestral program in collaboration with School of Music faculty and staff.
  • Conduct the University Symphony Orchestra.
  • Assist in preparation of the orchestra for opera productions.
  • Continue to engage in nationally/internationally recognized creative/professional practice and/or scholarship.
  • Teach courses in orchestral conducting and literature at graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Responsibly recruit, mentor, and train teaching assistants within the orchestral conducting program.
  • Mentor and advise students from all areas including undergraduate and graduate performance majors, music-education majors, and non-music majors.
  • Engage in local, national, and international recruiting of exceptional students to all programs within the School of Music with a focus on the string area.
  • Work well with colleagues within and outside the School, and in building interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • Regularly attend School of Music performances and recitals and be a visible and key member of the School of Music community.
  • Actively participate in departmental, college and university service, including committee work and academic support services, such as: auditions, student recruitment, program review (including implementation and assessment of outcomes), student advising, supervision of student organizations, and participation in sponsored off-campus activities.
  • Where appropriate, demonstrate the potential to bring external funding to the School/College. Pursuit of external grants in support of research or creative activity in the faculty member’s field, is encouraged.
