The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) Student Recruitment Coordinator works to proactively recruit new students for undergraduate programs in the college. This position develops, oversees and implements targeted and strategic recruitment efforts in order to increase freshman and sophomore enrollment in CLA, and is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating strategies to increase undergraduate enrollment and improve yield rates.
The Student Recruitment Coordinator takes a statewide approach with a particular focus on rural Oregon and Portland high schools that historically enroll a significant percentage of students of diverse backgrounds. Efforts target underserved populations across the state and provide meaningful connections with prospective students who are interested in the liberal arts. Full collaboration with our marketing team ensures that the materials and messaging to prospective students reflect the strategic plan of both the college and the university.
The CLA Student Recruitment Coordinator reports to the Associate Dean for Student Services and is a valued member of the CLA student services unit.
45% Recruitment Travel and Events
- Schedules recruitment and other related events, coordinates travel arrangements, and ensures effective use of resources.
- Visits middle schools, high schools, and colleges; presents to groups, individual students, and families about CLA and the various programs the college offers.
- Attends and represents CLA at college fairs throughout the state.
- Coordinates with the OSU Welcome Center to arrange visits from prospective students and families.
- Collaborates with appropriate internal OSU teams as necessary to support recruitment activities (admissions and enrollment management, marketing and communications, precollege programs, Ecampus, INTO, etc.).
- Organizes, attends, and hosts events locally, and potentially nationally, such as college fairs and job fairs to support recruitment and matriculation goals - including online/virtual events.
- Acts as a main point of contact from the college for undergraduate recruitment matters.
- Responds to prospective student inquiries. Establishes, coordinates, and maintains effective communication with prospective students, applicants, and admits prior to matriculation.
- Meets with school counselors to promote outreach activities; builds and maintains relationships with high schools, community colleges, and other external entities.
- In collaboration with other relevant OSU entities, helps to strengthen and establish transfer pipelines and pathways.
- Serves as a liaison to develop partnerships between the university and local school systems throughout the state.
15% Planning, Coordination, and Assessment of Recruitment and Enrollment Plans
- Identifies, creates, implements, and assesses strategic practices to increase undergraduate enrollment and improve yield rates (admitted students who continue to matriculation).
- Works to increase the number and diversity of undergraduate students enrolled in the college.
- In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Student Services, prepares, and modifies when necessary, annual undergraduate recruitment plans, which identify specific recruitment activities to be implemented during the year.
- Regularly evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of undergraduate student recruitment processes and initiatives for CLA.
- Coordinates administrative reports for college leadership to demonstrate progress towards metrics and college goals; collects and analyzes various data to help determine future practices, strategies, and initiatives.
10% Marketing and Communication
- Collaborates with the college marketing and communication team to create and distribute recruitment materials and execute targeted recruitment communication strategies, ensuring alignment and brand integrity.
- Consults and collaborates with current students, faculty, program directors, college leadership, and other relevant stakeholders on promotional strategies for specific majors and programs.
5% Lead Work
- Coordinates and oversees CLA student ambassador involvement in recruitment efforts.
- Coordinates involvement of appropriate personnel such as current students, faculty, staff, and academic advisors in recruitment efforts.
5% Other duties as assigned
- Performs and participates in other duties as assigned by supervisor and college leadership, for example, may assist with campus tours, START sessions, and new student welcome and orientation programs.
Qualifications and Characteristics
The Student Recruitment Coordinator proactively brings innovative vision, energy, and integrity to CLA’s recruitment efforts. The Student Recruitment Coordinator will continually refine and intentionally drive the direction of the college’s recruiting based on the evolving goals and needs of the college and its schools. Successful candidates will have the following experience and abilities:
- Bachelor's degree and at least three (3) years of professional experience working in higher education student recruitment and/or admissions; or a combination of education and experience.
- Ability to understand the needs of diverse groups of prospective students (teens, adult learners, transfer students, first generation, veterans, underserved populations, etc.).
- Ability and commitment to develop and implement innovative or creative programs, solutions, or ideas to meet various diverse group needs, and to promote and enhance diversity.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, prepare reports, and to develop and deliver presentations.
- Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, data base, presentation, and Email programs.
- Experience with customer relationship management (CRM) tools such as Slate.
- Demonstrated knowledge of student recruitment, yield, and retention issues.
- Ability to gather, compile, and analyze data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities.
- Ability to plan, assess, and evaluate programs.
- Ability to travel for the purposes of recruitment and to work on campus at a frequency and duration sufficient to perform essential job functions.
- This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
- This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
