The Mathematics and Computer Science faculty of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) is actively seeking applications for a full-time Mathematics teacher. The core mathematics curriculum includes materials developed by faculty members and integrates concepts from geometry, pre-calculus, trigonometry and analytic geometry with ideas from discrete mathematics, statistics and data analysis.  This is followed by Advanced Placement calculus, taken by over 90% of Academy students.  Electives are offered in the areas of problem-solving, data analysis, advanced geometry, discrete mathematics, computer science, and advanced mathematics (differential equations, multi-variable calculus, number theory, algebraic structures, real analysis).   The selected candidate will be responsible for curriculum delivery as well as ongoing development and revision of the outlined courses. We encourage individuals who enjoy making a difference in the lives of talented high school students and who have a master’s degree or PhD in mathematics, statistics, applied mathematics or related field to apply.

This position fulfills the requirement for DFI (Diversifying Higher Education Faculty in Illinois) Fellows following completion of their academic program.

The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10–12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program. It also serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry.

  • Teach core mathematics courses including pre-calculus and calculus.
  • Work toward a technology-rich, innovative classroom experience for students.
  • Guide and tutoring students outside of class.

The required qualifications for this position include:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in mathematics or mathematics education.
  • Experience and comfort with students and colleagues from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • An exemplary teaching record.
  • Effective communication with students, staff, and parents.
  • Active participation in a collaborative team environment.
  • Engagement in reflective professional practice.
  • Highly motivated, results-oriented individual.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work in a fast-paced team environment with ability to function diplomatically and effectively at all levels.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who have the flexibility to teach mathematics in addition to computer science (pre-calculus or beyond), senior candidates with leadership experience, and those with experience in innovative teaching and learning techniques including on-line learning.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in curriculum design
  • High school equivalent teaching experience
  • Bilingual, Spanish 

Salary and Benefits:

Salary and benefits are commensurate with training and experience expected at this level of employment.  The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy offers an excellent comprehensive benefits package including health and retirement benefits.  The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) is reciprocal with other Illinois public retirement systems such as the Teachers’ Retirement Systems of Illinois (TRS) and the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
