Research Technician II- Biochemistry, Cellular & Molecular Biology 

A research specialist (lab technician) position is available in the Alexandre lab in BCMB department at UTK (http://bcmb.utk.edu/people/faculty/gladys-alexandre/). The lab is working on the mechanisms by which motile soil bacteria detect and navigate the environment, including the plant rhizosphere, using chemotaxis. We are using microbiology, molecular biology, genetics and microscopy approaches to study how bacterial chemotaxis contributes to plant root surface colonization and nitrogen fixation. Salary is commensurate with skills and experience. This is a full time position with a full benefits package from the University of Tennessee.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Candidate is expected to perform experiments to support ongoing research projects. This may include bench work and/or data analysis. The candidate is also expected to contribute to basic lab upkeep, including washing laboratory glassware, bacterial strain maintenance, as well as preparing/ordering buffers and reagents.

 



Qualifications
Minimum Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a related field
  • Knowledge or previous laboratory experience
  • Excellent communication skills
Minimum Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Willing and abilities to work on non-model bacteria; and at least one of the following skills
  • Previous experience working in a microbiology, molecular and cellular biology research lab
  • Previous experience in using of pipettes, basic microbiology and molecular biology skills, and basic understanding and use of light microscopy of live cells
Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience in bacterial genetics and related molecular biology approaches (conjugation, plasmid isolation and modification, PCR, etc.)
  • Experience on constructing and using fluorescently tagged bacteria and microscopy
  • Experience on using plant inoculation with microbes and analysis of plant-microbe associations
