Departmental Overview

The Basic Needs Center acts as a central hub to support students in their journey to access essential services that impact health, belonging, and overall well-being. We define basic needs as an ecosystem that includes: financial stability; nutritious and sufficient food; safe, secure and adequate housing (to sleep, study, cook and shower); accessible and equitable health/medical care; sustaining emotional/mental well-being; affordable transportation; resources for personal hygiene; and, emergency needs for students with dependents.

The Basic Needs Center team is committed to fostering belonging and justice on the UC Berkeley campus through a robust model of prevention, intervention and emergency relief efforts addressing students' food, housing and financial needs. The Basic Needs Center offers the following services to all students including undergraduate, graduate, international and undocumented student communities: virtual drop-in services, case management/care coordination services, prevention and emergency food, housing and financial resources including direct financial awards.

Responsibilities
  • Leads campus CalFresh program and policy efforts by developing and coordinating CalFresh policy and program communications, formulating strategies for scaling enrollment, as well as guiding the strategic plan.
  • Develops and advocates solutions to current barriers in CalFresh access and enrollment, including developing and administering new systems, policies, processes, and programs. Provides in-depth, complex analyses as a specialist in the CalFresh program.
  • Develops proposals and recommendations to guide and support a broader strategic direction for the UC Berkeley student community utilization local social services including CalWorks, MediCal and CalFresh.
  • Assists with the recruitment, hiring, training, and advisement of student employees, interns, and volunteers for the CalFresh program. Assists with the development of the service-learning curriculum for interns and volunteers.
  • Collaborates with campus, local and state partners to coordinate the development, implementation and monitoring of new programs and processes for CalFresh. as well as other local city and county social services.
  • Makes high level contacts of a sensitive nature, internally and externally, requiring discretion and diplomacy in order to negotiate with or persuade officials to adopt the proposed solution or program/process recommendations.
  • Leads and participates in policy, strategy and planning committees and working groups related to CalFresh and other social services.
  • Researches, designs and implements best practices in field.

Required Qualifications
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Analytical / problem-solving skills.
  • Strong skills in analyzing, researching and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals / analyses.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
