PRIMARY POSITION FUNCTION/SUMMARY: The Biological Research Scientist will conduct research on genome editing in crops using CRISPR/Cas9 to advance design, editing, and biotechnology tools for genome engineering in bioenergy crops of interest.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Biological Research Scientist will . . .
- Design and conduct experiments, analyze data, author publications, present at conferences and meetings.
- Develop experimental protocols and automated processes for high-throughput workflow, including culturing and genome editing of algae along with transformation, genome editing and regeneration of plant protoplasts.
- Employ the CROPSR software to generate guides and primers necessary for CRISPR genome editing.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Required - PhD in plant molecular biology or closely related field.
Experience: Required - Several years of experience (minimum of 4 which may include postdoctoral research experience) with research project management in an academic, private, or relevant public/non-profit environment. Post PhD research experience in plant genetics. Preferred - Experience in administrative management of academic research projects.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of Plant Genetics/Genomes, Molecular Biology, and/or Crop Sciences. Evidence of consistent use of good judgment, discretion, and tactful communication. Energy and enthusiasm for expressing the value of diverse cultures, fostering empathy, and improving organizations in the areas of access and representation. Knowledge and experience with office software and ability to learn custom systems. Ability to handle multiple priorities without direct supervision. Excellent oral and written communications skills.

Environmental Demands: Work is performed in both laboratory and office settings. Minimal field sampling may also be required.
SALARY: Commensurate with experience and qualifications
APPOINTMENT STATUS: Full-time academic professional, grant-supported appointment renewable annually pending continued funding and satisfactory progress within the position. Qualified individuals will be eligible to receive vacation, sick, and personal leave; retirement through the State Universities Retirement System; and group health, dental, vision and life insurance.

Research
Students and scholars find the University an ideal place to conduct research. The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology is a model for interdisciplinary research, where eighteen research groups from sixteen University departments work within and across three broadly defined themes: biological intelligence, human-computer intelligent interaction, and molecular and electronic nanostructures. The University is also home to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).
Undergraduate Education
The University has a fundamental commitment to undergraduate education. Nearly 28,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in nine undergraduate divisions, which together offer some 4,000 courses in more than 150 fields of study.

The Arts
A major center for the arts, the campus attracts dozens of nationally and internationally renowned artists each year to its widely acclaimed Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The University also supports two major museums: the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion; and the Spurlock Museum, a museum of world history and culture.
Other major facilities include the multipurpose Assembly Hall (16,500 seats); Memorial Stadium (70,000 seats), site of Big Ten Conference football games; and the Intramural-Physical Education Building, one of the largest recreational facilities of its kind on a university campus.
