Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is an on-call position. Provides food service, custodial, grounds maintenance, general labor or other main support on an on-call basis.

Unit Position Summary

This is a position at the Grand Rapids Research Center in Grand Rapids Michigan.

Job Summary/Basic Function: The Glassware Operator has primary responsibility for collecting,
cleaning, sterilizing, and stocking laboratory glassware that is used for research at the Michigan
State University Grand Rapids Research Center (GRRC), a highly complex facility that performs
cutting-edge research with regional, national and global partners. This position will
help to provide shared research services to faculty research while ensuring workspace is safe,
clean and ready for use. This position may also help with consumable stocking, inventory
reconciliation and miscellaneous tasks related to the glassware program. The weekly hours
of this part-time position are subject to change relative to workload.

Initial responsibilities will include education on sterile techniques, biohazardous
training and familiarization with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The position
also includes maintaining cleanliness of the glassware washing room and storage areas.

Required: The ability to follow exacting procedures without compromise. This job requires the
ability to lift up to 50 lbs and the operation of heavy machinery, such as
autoclaves and
commercial glassware washers.

Desired Qualifications

Desired: Basic laboratory experience and/or knowledge/training that is acquired or equivalent to one year of college, technical, vocation or trade school course work in the sciences. Scientific and/or research background with excellent communication engagement skills. An emphasis on customer service; flexibility to deal with urgent or last-minute problems as they arise; enthusiastic and committed approach with a track record of building strong, trusted relationships with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels. Ability to comprehend and use technology to aid in the management of duties including mobile smart phone or tablet.
Hazards: Operation of sterilizing equipment under high temperature and pressure conditions; occasional broken glass and sharp edges; handling glassware with residue of chemicals related to biomedical research.
