The Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for the position of Athletics Academic Coordinator to support student-athletes in various sport programs.

Athletics Academic Coordinators provide academic advising, counseling, and assistance to student athletes in areas of course selection, registration procedures, degree requirements, career planning, University resources, and other related topics associated with academic performance for one or more sports programs. Athletics Academic Coordinators facilitate student-athlete engagement and support the overall student experience by connecting students with resources to develop academic skills and fully engage with the University in pursuit of their goals. Athletics Academic Coordinators are typically assigned to support one large, or several smaller, sports programs, but they may also perform more specialized tasks at this level. Their work is mainly independent, with some oversight and accountability for delivering consistently high quality services. Athletic Academic Coordinators are responsible for maintaining appropriate files and records of academic information, diligently monitoring athletic eligibility and academic progress according to grade reports, and maintaining a detailed and current knowledge of all NCAA, ACC, and University rules and regulations related to academic support. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

• Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records.

• Knowledge of collegiate academic structures and processes and the ability to lead and guide Division I student-athletes.

• Proven ability to create and implement holistic student development initiatives in support of students’ academic growth.

• Enthusiasm for creative problem solving to maximize students’ overall engagement with resources and opportunities.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

• Proven effectiveness developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with constituents throughout the university, including faculty and staff.

• Knowledge of a wide range of learning strategies and study skills development techniques.

• Awareness and sensitivity to the academic, athletics, and social pressures faced by student-athletes at the college level.

• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.

• Ability to gather data, compile information, maintain records and prepare reports.

• Ability to analyze and solve problems and use independent judgment to manage and impart confidential information.

• Strong attention to detail and demonstrated accountability for results.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $43,000 - $45,000, dependent upon qualifications.

Education: Bachelor's Degree required.

Experience: Some experience working in academic advising, teaching, counseling, student affairs, or a related field is required.

Education: Master's Degree in higher education, counseling, or a related field is strongly preferred.

Experience: 4+ years of related experience; prior experience in a Division IA institution.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Working knowledge of NCAA academic eligibility and recruiting rules and regulations.
