Department Description:

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, founded in 1975, is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the country. The Center’s mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and the nation through research, treatment, training and outreach.
The Center for AIDS Research/Swanstrom Laboratory in the Lineberger Cancer Center carries out research on human retroviruses, especially HIV-1 the AIDS virus. The aims of the laboratory are as follows: 1. carry out laboratory-based AIDS research in transmission, pathogenesis, drug resistance, and vaccine development using state of the art technologies for culturing and quantitating relevant viruses and for genotyping viral and cellular genomes; and 2. receive and store for the short-term and long-term storage of biological specimens (peripheral blood mononuclear cells, plasma, serum, CSF, genital secretions, etc.) for future study.

Position Description:

The primary goal of this position is to assist the lab in carrying out next generation deep sequencing analysis of HIV from human specimens, mainly plasma specimens. This will involve extraction of viral RNA, cDNA synthesis and PCR amplification, and library preparation prior to sequencing. After sequencing the data must be processed using Primer ID then analyzed using phylogenetic tools.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Experience with basic microbiology and molecular biology techniques. Experience with viral RNA extraction from human specimens, purification, PCR and RT-PCR.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with safety procedures in the BLS2/BSL2+ laboratory.
