Position Summary:The Carolina Population Center has an opening for a Senior Research Scientist in the population sciences who will serve as Principal Investigator (PI) of multiple projects. The scientist appointed to the position will lead a highly specialized research program to design and field pioneering longitudinal surveys and intervention studies in low resource settings, design and execute a multi-faceted funding strategy to win grants that support the work, develop a complex publications program working with a range of other scientists at UNC and internationally to analyze the resulting data and publish in peer-reviewed journals, oversee other research scholars, programmers, and associates to prepare and release the data to the public, and be responsible for administrative, financial, personnel and planning aspects of the program. The scientist is expected to develop a program in which they will serve as Principal Investigator on multiple grants from multiple funding agencies.
Activities include:
- Developing and executing a strategy for obtaining external funding for projects from federal agencies including NIH
- Leading and serving as PI for a complex portfolio of externally-funded research projects in conjunction with an international team of researchers
- Leading design of interventions to improve physical, psychosocial, and cognitive health across the lifespan, with an emphasis on lower middle income countries
- Designing, testing, and rigorously evaluating new modes of data collection
- Developing and overseeing a publication program for research papers in top peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Presenting results to a wide range of national and international audiences
- Overseeing production of public use data files and accompanying documentation
- Supervising a team of programmers and students using project data
- Engaging in other national and international outreach activities including to international audiences
- Promoting the dissemination and application of research-based information to policymakers and practitioners
- Managing and administering financial, compliance, and personnel components of projects
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Qualifications and Experience:- PhD in the social or health sciences or related discipline preferred.
- Minimum of 12 years’ experience in data collection and analysis
- Demonstrated ability to lead large-scale complex field-based studies conducted in low resource settings, including design, implementation, and supervision of real-time quality control of individual, household, and community-level survey data
- Demonstrated ability to lead and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists in international contexts
- Demonstrated ability to oversee analysis of complex, multi-level longitudinal survey data
- Demonstrated experience in written communication, public speaking and presentation
- Demonstrated knowledge of research, as well as qualitative and quantitative evaluation methodologies
- Previous experience working in Indonesia and other LMIC settings strongly preferred.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.
