This is a senior supervisory position managing animal husbandry operations in AAALAC accredited animal facilities housing predominately rodents, companion animals, and agricultural species. Incumbent will supervise and perform all aspects of animal husbandry in the Central Animal Facility utilizing multiple species of laboratory animals in ABSL-1 and ABSL-2 environments. Individual will be responsible for the daily care and management of animals including feeding, watering, sanitation, animal health surveillance, enrichment and environmental monitoring following established schedules, procedures and guidelines. Assures animals and the vivarium are appropriately maintained in accordance with USDA Animal Welfare regulations, the Guide for the Care & Use of Laboratory Animals, the BMBL manual, and institutional policies.

Job involves performing personnel management duties including scheduling work assignments, training and mentoring employees and evaluating work performance. Directs and performs sanitation duties such as cleaning and disinfection of animal rooms, primary enclosures and ancillary equipment. Assures all employees follows all established bio-safety/safety procedures while husbanding animals and performing sanitization tasks including the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Maintains, operates and supervises the use of animal care and ancillary equipment. Supervises and participates in the handling, restraint and transport of animals. Establishes and ensures the documentation and maintenance of facility records.

Coordinates and performs animal facility orientations and trains staff in University Research Animal Resources policies and procedures. Monitors and maintains operational supplies inventory and equipment. Responsible for animal facility database management of animal order receipts, census, billing, and animal identification. Advises animal resources facility management personnel on maintenance issues and ensures equipment and facility preventative maintenance tasks are appropriately completed following established schedules. Participates in pre-study meetings and provides husbandry and technical services to animal facility users. Conducts, monitors, and documents the integrated pest management plan for the vivarium and coordinates program with operations manager. Performs job performance appraisals, initiates employee time/leave reporting, and assists with metrics reports. Writes, reviews, and revises Animal Resources Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and assures all employees are properly trained and all work performed is in accordance with established SOPs.

Interacts with the operations manager to coordinate project management and resource scheduling/utilization with research and animal care/veterinary teams. Provides support for in vivo research conducted in facilities by managing the day to day interactions with principal investigators and research technicians. Participation in UGA’s Occupational Health & Safety Program is needed and may include vaccinations, spirometry and respirator fit testing. Candidate will participate in on-going training and continuing education programs. Incumbent will work and perform emergency on-call duties as assigned, during weekdays, overnight, rotating weekends, holidays and on-call duties as assigned.

The ideal applicant will have the ability to independently perform animal facility management duties in a research vivarium utilizing multiple laboratory animal species including rodents and companion animals strictly adhering to applicable regulatory statues and institutional policies. Applicants will have the ability to communicate clearly and succinctly utilizing good verbal and written skills. Good leadership skills are essential, as well as the ability to plan, establish, and supervise employees in the applicable standard operating procedures relating to animal care and bio-safety/safety practices. They will have the ability to define work priorities, allocate labor and equipment resources and evaluate employee work progress. This is a working supervisor position and the job requires excellent organizational skills establishing, adjusting and fulfilling all job responsibilities to ensure timely and accurate completion of work while efficiently using resources. The ideal candidate will be able to independently develop work improvement plans to maximize performance, foster teamwork and facilitate the daily work schedules of subordinates in order to meet all research project objectives. Incumbent will have considerable interaction with the, principal investigators, veterinary and research staff. Job involves good problem solving skills and the ability to formulate and implement effective and efficient solutions. Qualified applicants will be skilled in computer programs such as Word & Excel and possess an aptitude to learn new facility management software programs.

Withstand sustained periods of physical activity such as standing, bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and lift 50 pounds. Work sometimes under demanding conditions (high humidity, unpleasant odors, animal excreta and noise). Work environment involves some exposure to biohazards and/or physical risks, which involve following established safety procedures. Job may involve taking multiple showers each day and wearing PPE (PAPRS, protective clothing, battery packs, respirators, gloves, etc.) and stand on hard surfaces for prolonged periods of time. Restrain, handle, and treat multiple species of animals in relatively confined spaces. Work may be physically demanding involving the transport, relocation and positioning of animal care and auxiliary equipment. This position will involve participation in the research occupational health and safety program which may include specific vaccinations before entering restricted facilities.

Performs various personnel management duties. Trains, mentors, and counsels subordinate employees in institutional policies, procedures and practices. Establishes employee work schedules and assigns daily work tasks. Responsible for employee performance evaluations, payroll/leave functions, and other personnel related administrative duties. Maintains and ensures appropriate supplies and equipment inventories. Conducts, monitors, and supervises employees in the daily observation of animals for signs of diseases, sickness or abnormal behavior. Assures animal health notifications and documentation are appropriate. Coordinates and supervises the rodent health surveillance, animal facility quality assurance and integrated pest management program.

Initiates and maintains all facility records such as animal room logs, sanitation logs, census activity sheets, etc. Performs animal census management duties and enters data and transactions into animal facility management database. Writes, revises and reviews Standard Operating Procedures.

Conducts facility orientations and facilitates training programs for personnel. Performs services and provides resources and assistance to animal facility users and staff.
