Job Summary:

This position reports directly to Dr. Thomas Morrison, Professor in the Immunology and Microbiology Department, and is responsible for work on virological and immunological mechanisms that influence viral clearance versus virus persistence.  This individual will be expected to utilize state-of-the art genetic, molecular, biochemical, cellular, computational, and in vivo approaches and to initiate new directions at the interface of virology and immunology based on insights from the literature and their own experimental findings.

Specific Position Duties with Percentages of Time

Research (75% or more):

    Pursues research goals established by the Principal Investigator and the fellow.  Responsible to the Principal Investigator for all aspects of planning, developing, operating, recording, and reporting of assigned research projects. Participates actively in designing, developing, and executing a wide variety of laboratory procedures under the supervision of the head of the laboratory.  Performs experimental investigations with considerable independence on a day-to-day basis.Has or acquires the skills needed to accomplish research goals, including, but not limited to, extensive techniques in molecular biology (RNA analysis and manipulation, RNA and reagent design, DNA cloning, quantitative RT-PCR, etc.), virology (virus infection, cell cultures, use of bacterial genetics and recombination, etc.), biochemistry (production, purification and characterization of DNA, RNA, proteins or other biomolecules, bioinformatics (both basic bioinformatic analysis and interfacing with bioinformatics specialists), and immunology.      Performs routine and non-routine tests leading to the successful accomplishment of experimental goals, including trouble-shooting of laboratory protocols and overcoming experimental problems.Collaborates with and teaches other researchers to accomplish major research goals. Accurately collects and records experimental data and analyses data independently or in conjunction with other research staff.  Reviews, develops, and implements quality control of new or modified laboratory techniques that may affect any part of major projects.\\Anticipates predictable needs and ensures that the laboratory remains stocked with common laboratory supplies, that equipment is properly maintained and serviced. Ensures that reagents (such as molecular constructs, plasmids, bacterial strains, cell lines, etc.) that are generated are properly documented, maintained, and stored in the common laboratory database.Assists in diagnosing and solving system/software problems, installing applications software, and addressing other computer needs related to assigned research projects.Maintains a neat and orderly laboratory.Assists the Principal Investigator in preparing required documents to obtain and maintain University approvals to work with animals, specimens of human origins, biohazards, infectious agents, and recombinant DNA molecules as applicable to assigned research projects.Participates regularly in departmental seminars, journal clubs, research-in-progress meetings and meetings of the laboratory group
Research Publications and Grant Applications (15%):

    Analyzes and prepares research data in appropriate formats for presentation at scientific meetings, for publication in proceedings, books, and peer-reviewed journals, and for use in grant applications. Assists the Principal Investigator with the writing and editing of scientific manuscripts and grant applications.Meets regularly with the Principal Investigator to present research progress, review research data, troubleshoot problems, and plan future experiments.Presents data in formal settings as required, including but not limited to laboratory meetings, departmental seminars and journal clubs, institutional forums, and national and international scientific conferences, meetings, and workshops.Prepares applications for independent funding including postdoctoral fellowships, travel awards, and other opportunities as they arise.
Supervision and Training (10%):

    Trains and supervises laboratory student workers, medical or graduate students, professional research assistants, or other laboratory personnel as assigned by the head of the laboratory;Performs as a technical advisor to laboratory staff and/or collaborating scientists regarding complex analytical methods and/or sophisticated laboratory techniques within his/her areas of expertise.
Performs all other duties as assigned.

This position may require occasional extended hours and/or time outside normal working hours.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring rate (or budgeted rate) for this position has been established at $53,760. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • All requirements for graduation from an accredited college or university with a PhD, MD, DVM or equivalent doctoral level degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Immunology or a related field in the biomedical sciences must be completed before the starting date for this position.  Candidates in the final stages of completing their doctoral level degree are eligible to apply.
  • Published work in peer reviewed journals related to one or more of these scientific disciplines.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Productivity and excellence in previous research positions.
  • Demonstrated skills in problem solving and working collaboratively and effectively with other members of a research team.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in communicating orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with considerable independence.
  • Experience with computer programming and computational approaches for the analysis of large RNA sequencing data sets.
