The University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for the position of Director of a new interdisciplinary Research Institute dedicated to research related to health and well-being. The successful candidate for the Director of the provisionally titled Institute for Inclusive Health Research (IIHR) will be eligible for a full-time tenure stream academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be to a relevant department at UTSC depending on their area of expertise. The Director appointment will be for a 5-year term effective, January 1, 2022 or shortly thereafter, with the possibility of renewal for a second term.


The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant discipline by the time of appointment and have a distinguished record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose scholarship complement existing research strengths at the University of Toronto Scarborough in areas related to health and well-being. We seek candidates with an established international reputation who can lead innovative research at the highest levels and maintain an outstanding and competitive research program. The ideal candidate will bring an extensive track record of procuring competitive research funding from funding councils, government, industry and/or other partners, including experience collaborating and building partnerships within and outside the university.


Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing.


Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference.


The successful candidate will possess superior leadership and management skills, demonstrated by accomplishments as a successful academic administrator and a scholar-leader in a research-intensive institution. They will be responsible for establishing IIHR and providing leadership for it consistent with the highest standards of scholarly excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration. Their mandate will include developing a financially self-sustaining and visionary research agenda for the Institute; securing external funding to support its research activities; and developing a communication and dissemination strategy; and coordinating research efforts on IIHR themes.

The Director will report to the Vice-Principal for Research and Innovation, UTSC, and will be supported by an administrative team. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.


IIHR is one of three research institutes being established to realize UTSC’s strategic vision of global prominence in selected areas of scholarshipas laid out in its strategic plan, Inspiring Inclusive Excellence. The three research institutes will be based at UTSC and will function as tri-campus research institutes. They are accompanied by the Clusters of Scholarly Prominence Program (CSPP), UTSC’s new flagship program for supporting the pursuit of strategic research initiatives. The CSPP is designed to promote self-sustaining, interdisciplinary clusters of scholarship in areas of established and emerging strength at UTSC. These interdisciplinary areas will demonstrate capacity to augment the University of Toronto’s global standing as an institution with demonstrated prominence in research, creative activity and exceptional learning. The Director of IIHR will be responsible for administering Clusters of Scholarly Prominance focused on health and well-being.
