The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a FUSE Student Researcher - Biology on the Dahlonega campus. This position is part of the Faculty-Undergraduate Summer Engagement Program (FUSE). Between May 31 and July 23, 2021. The student will work with faculty members on the project aiming evaluating if Kinesio Tapes increase the skin exposure to disease causing bacteria. Bacteria were isolated from volunteers who wore KT tapes for 5 days. Identification and antimicrobial resistance profiling will be conducted. This work will include the use of biochemical assays for the identification of microorganisms as well as standardized clinical assays for the identification of antimicrobial resistance.Responsibilities
- Grow and maintain bacterial cultures.
- Perform antibiotic resistance assays.
- Identify bacteria using BIOLOG system.
- Gather literature related to identified bacteria.
- Document results and participate in a poster and manuscript preparation.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of basic biology lab equipment and instruments.
- Proficiency in public speaking and interpersonal skills.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Current UNG student not graduating before December 2021.
- Preference will be given to biology majors with an interest in environmental microbiology and antibiotic resistance.
- Prior experience in laboratory research is a plus but not required.
