The University of North Georgia Department is currently accepting applicatiosn for a FUSE Student Researcher in the Physics and Astronomy deparment on the Gainesville campus. This research assistant will work under the direct supervision of UNG faculty on astronomy research related to the large-scale structure of the Universe. The assistant will work with large-scale galaxy survey data, develop visualizations of these data, and create a framework for classification of the structures found in the data. The assistant will also analyze results from their structure classifications and document these results in the form of a final report and presentation. The research assistant will join the FUSE program to conduct focused and meaningful research, scholarly and creative activities alongside a faculty researcher from May 31 - July 23, 2021.Responsibilities
- Explore and develop visualizations of data
- Lead the creation of a system for large-scale structure classification.
- Use the Zooniverse website interface to create a citizen science project
- Analyze dataset of classifications obtained from Zooniverse.
- Document final results of project in the form of a written report and presentation.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong written communication skills.
- Computer literacy.
- Attention to detail.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Current UNG student not graduating before December 2021.
- Completion of a college-level introductory physics or astronomy course with an average of C or higher by start date.
- Prior computer programming experience is preferred but not required.
