Description
A large research group at the Alzheimer’s Center at Temple is seeking an Assistant Scientist. The individual selected for this position will work in the subunit of the group that investigates the role of lipids and lipid metabolism proteins in neurodegeneration (Alzheimer’s disease and age-related macular degeneration) and will report to the leader of the lipid research subunit. The Assistant Scientist in the Alzheimer’s Center provides technical support by conducting experiments and independently handles experiments or small research projects requiring advanced knowledge and experience in a specific scientific area or discipline. Maintains records of data and may be involved in training graduate and medical students in research methods and procedures. 

Responsibilities include: maintaining immortalized and iPS cells, including medium change every 1-2 days, necessitating a medium change once over the weekend; maintaining the laboratory's animal colony; manipulating the genome of cell lines; conducting experiments including vector construction, iPS and immortalized cell genome editing using CRISPR/Cas9, transgene insertion into the genome of iPS and immortalized cells, directional differentiation of iPS cells to the desired cell types, characterization of the cell proteome and secretome using ELISA, western immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry and characterization of the cell transcriptome using quantitative PCR; analyzing human brain tissue specimens and animal (mouse and rat) brain, eye and other tissue, using ELISA, western immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry, quantitative PCR and staining with lipophilic reagents.

The Assistant Scientist receives extensive training in the requisite procedures and experimental protocols and will work independently, and is suitable for newer graduates. The Assistant Scientist also contributes to deriving new cell and animal models; maintains records including detailed outlines of employed procedures and experimental protocols, detailed records of conducted experiments and data, including a database of western, microscope and other types of images and a collection of spreadsheet files of numerical data; analyzes images using ImageJ and other image analysis software, analyze and graph numerical data using GraphPad Prism, prepare figures for presentation and present results at lab meetings and conferences. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience: BS degree or higher in a biology-related field and two years of research experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
