Description:

Under the supervision of the Director and Curator of Special Collections & Archives, the Special Collections Education and Outreach Librarian is responsible for promoting, interpreting, and encouraging the use of the Library’s special collections in support of teaching, learning, and research.
Working in a collegial, dynamic, and user-centered environment, the incumbent will

  • forge relationships with faculty to encourage the integration of special collections into teaching and student research
  • provide reference support and assist in interpreting special collections holdings for Hamilton users and visiting groups and scholars
  • promote, develop, and conduct instruction sessions relating to special collections materials
  • manage the operation of the letterpress studio and mentor a student printing club
  • work with special collections and archives staff in the preparation of finding aids for collections and making them accessible using EAD (Encoded Archival Description) in ArchivesSpace
  • work with metadata and digital strategies staff to identify and implement dynamic web-based platforms for on-line bibliographies relevant to our special collections holdings (Shakers, House of David/Mary’s City of David, Inspirationists)
  • assist in preparing exhibits and planning programs to promote special collections
  • develop and execute special projects as assigned
  • supervises staff and students as required

Qualifications:

A master’s degree in library science, or a related field, is a requirement. Demonstrable commensurate experience would be acceptable. Above all else, the position requires a deep passion for, and love of, books, print, and manuscript culture, and the right personality to successfully engage students and communicate that enthusiasm to them. This position necessitates an outgoing personality and someone very comfortable doing public presentations.

Previous instructional experience in a college-level or higher setting is strongly desirable. Additionally, facility with book technology and history, i.e., the history of writing, paper, printing, and binding, and an actual knowledge of letterpress printing, are crucial to success in this role. A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and an understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace, is expected. Finally, a strong attention to detail in connoisseurship of books, manuscripts, ephemera, visual materials, and realia, is needed for the creation of effective finding aids to facilitate the discovery of, and access to, our collections.
