The Office of Environmental Health and Safety is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Industrial Hygienist (Abatement Project Monitor). The successful candidate works under the general tutelage and guidance provided by the Hazardous Building Materials Manager, but with independent initiative regarding the establishment of work priorities and consultative interactions. They assist in implementing the University’s policy regarding the management of asbestos-containing materials, lead-containing materials and other building-related hazardous materials by providing on-site monitoring and documentation of abatement activities, including collection and analysis of air samples utilizing Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM).

The Industrial Hygienist (Abatement Project Monitor) assists the Hazardous Building Materials Manager with building inspections and special projects as needed. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to safety in the workplace; have strong communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; and have a strong knowledge of pertinent regulatory requirements. Candidates will routinely work after normal business hours and weekends to align with scheduled construction activities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitors and/or supervises hazardous materials abatement projects, and operations and maintenance activities for regulatory and contractual compliance.

  • Collects environmental, personal, and clearance air samples required for abatement projects. Collects bulk samples and/or other project-specific samples for off-site analysis. Maintains air sampling equipment.

  • Generates and maintains records of worksite inspections and air sample results.

  • Analyzes air samples taken by Phase Contrast Microscopy, as well as the PAT proficiency samples. Maintains necessary equipment for PCM samples.

  • Performs asbestos inspections for asbestos- containing materials prior to renovation and maintenance activities. Provides written reports to project managers.

  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

  • May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required, a high school diploma plus four years of general work experience may be considered in lieu of degree. A Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health, Science, Engineering or a related field, is preferred.
  • Experience: Preferred experience in asbestos air sample collection and analysis by NIOSH 7400 method, construction trades, abatement/remediation, environmental inspections (including asbestos and lead), or building inspections (including construction quality control).
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to work on elevated work spaces (ladders, scaffolding, rooftops, etc.) using appropriate fall protection measures as required. Ability to work in small, enclosed work spaces such as tunnels and building crawlspaces is required. Must be able to perform required tasks while wearing a tight-fitting respirator. Significant knowledge in building construction and design, how to read and understand construction documents and drawings, knowledge about the historical use of hazardous building materials, a familiarity of University Buildings and their specific functions, visual skills and the ability to develop clear and accurate reports of inspection results, are all preferred.
  • Computer Applications: Competent in Microsoft Word and Excel, managing spreadsheets and databases, and experience with online research for the identification of technical resources
  • Licenses or Certification: Applicants must possess an active, unrestricted Virginia Driver's License or the ability to obtain a Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire. Virginia State Licensure as an Asbestos Project Monitor is preferred.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Asbestos monitoring/inspecting often requires the ability to crawl in confined spaces and carry ladders or air sampling equipment that may weigh up to 25 pounds.
    • This position may require routine walking between testing areas and standing for considerable periods of time
    • Lifting and carrying instrumentation may be a part of this job when in the field.
    • This position may require entering research laboratories, vivaria, and other areas where hazardous materials and potentially harmful equipment exists.
    • Manipulation of survey equipment requires reaching, standing, pulling, bending, ladder climbing and similar movements

Anticipated Hiring Range: Approximately $36K - $50K, commensurate with candidate's experience and qualifications, with UVA benefits.
