SUNY Oswego
Vice President for Student Affairs

SUNY Oswego is searching for a student-centered, visionary, servant leader who is committed to cultivating an accessible, equitable, and diverse environment to serve as their Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA). The VPSA will be the University's chief student affairs officer and oversee the following units: Auxiliary Services, Campus Life, Counseling Services, Health Services, Intercollegiate Athletics, Residence Life and Housing, and Student Conduct. The VPSA will lead a team in the collaborative creation and maintenance of a culture of care in the division student affairs, and across the other divisions of the institution.

The University
For more than 150 years SUNY Oswego has purposefully worked to increase academic and student success, sustain the university, and position its graduates to live ethical and meaningful lives and build a better world for future generations. The university's mission guides these efforts, "SUNY Oswego contributes to the common good by lighting the path to wisdom and empowering every person in the college community to pursue a meaningful life as a productive, responsible member of society." SUNY Oswego is rated among the best public comprehensive colleges in the region. Recognized for excellence and value, SUNY Oswego is known for its extraordinary faculty, its welcoming atmosphere, and its reputation for producing fiercely loyal alumni. SUNY Oswego currently includes about 7,000 undergraduates and 1,000 graduate students, all of whom attend classes on SUNY Oswego's 700-acre main campus on the shores of Lake Ontario, on its downtown Syracuse campus, and through its online and extended learning platforms.

The Position
The VPSA will oversee a recently reorganized division that is actively responding to the impacts of COVID-19 and work with staff to redefine and commit to a divisional mission and vision that will carry a new strategic plan forward. Direct reports include: Assistant Vice President for Residence Life and Housing, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Dean of Students, Director of Campus Life, Director of Counseling Center, Director of Health Services, and Director of Student Conduct, and an Administrative Assistant. Due to recent retirements, some of these positions will be filled by either new hires or interim leaders at the time the new VPSA takes office.

The successful candidate will be an experienced campus professional with a deep understanding of student development and student affairs with a synergistic approach to working with colleagues across campus. Serving as a member of the President's Council, the VPSA will join an established team of senior leaders who partner closely to advance the University's mission and vision. A key task for the incoming VPSA will be to develop and advance a strategic vision for the Division of Student Affairs while also strengthening collaborations across campus boundaries. The VPSA is expected to assume office on July 1, 2021, or soon thereafter.

Organization

Oswego is one of 13 university colleges in the SUNY system.
Continuing a commitment to comprehensive, high quality education, research and service, Oswego now offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs in a wide array of disciplines, from the liberal arts and sciences to business and education.

Some 365 faculty members -- 75% of whom hold doctoral degrees -- teach over 4,000 sections of classes each year to almost 8,000 full- and part-time students. In addition, nearly 800 students annually take advantage of "real world" internships that enable them to focus their career goals and enhance their employment potential.
Oswego is consistently listed among the highest rated colleges and universities in the Northeast. Oswego is ranked "highly competitive" by the prestigious Barron's Guide and is included in the U.S. News & World Report's Best Colleges edition.

College of Arts & Sciences
This is our biggest school, not only in number of students, but in number of curriculums. It offers 47 undergraduate majors in everything from American Studies to Zoology, 44 minors, eight cooperative degree programs, pre-professional advisement, several special-interest tracks and five graduate programs.

School of Business
To keep pace with a rapidly evolving business world, programs in the School of Business integrate classroom learning with advanced computer applications and various forms of applied education, such as case studies, simulations, group projects and internships. Seven majors include a five-year, combined B.S./M.S. accounting program -- the first in New York State -- and a graduate MBA program.

School of Education
Innovation in teaching methods has been a hallmark of SUNY Oswego since our founding as a teachers' college in 1861. This creative spirit still thrives in our School of Education, where advanced techniques and early experiences in the classroom help students become teachers ready to meet the expectations of today's students.
