Open-Rank Visiting Professor in Elementary Literacy Education Program

Position

The Department of Teaching and Learning Elementary Education Program at the University of Iowa invites applications for a two-year, 9-month (academic year) open rank visiting faculty position to fulfill the teaching, research, and service duties outlined below.  The position will begin August 18, 2021 through May 12, 2023.

Education Requirement

Prospective candidates must have earned a doctorate in literacy education or a related discipline by August 15, 2021.

Required Qualifications

  • Evidence of scholarly productivity and/or promise of such in elementary literacy education
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and anti-racist education
  • Demonstrated commitment and evidence of working and collaborating with culturally, linguistically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse populations
  • Expertise in at least one or more of the following areas of interest within elementary literacy education: anti-racist pedagogy, critical literacies, writing pedagogy, culturally responsive/sustaining pedagogy, multilingualism, reading, multimodal literacies, disciplinary literacies, early adolescent literacies, children’s literature, language arts, teacher education
  • Successful teaching experience in K-8 classrooms

Desirable Qualifications

  • Record of effective teaching at the postsecondary level
  • Licensure (or eligibility for licensure) in elementary education
  • Established record of securing external funds for research, training, and/or program development
  • Experience building partnerships with local schools and communities.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and courses in elementary literacy education
  • Coordinate field experiences for the elementary literacy methods courses
  • Conduct research in an area of specialization within elementary literacy
  • Participate in service to the program, department, college, and university

Salary

Two-year (9-month), non-renewable, visiting faculty position beginning August 18, 2021 through May 12, 2023.   Credential and criminal background check required.

About the Department and the Program

The Department of Teaching and Learning (T & L) at the University of Iowa includes over 35 faculty members. It includes nine teacher education programs as well as MAT/MS/MA and PhD graduate programs. The Elementary Education Program provides instruction to over 380 students each year. Elementary literacy includes a sequence of courses that collectively address children’s literature, reading and language arts methods in primary and intermediate grades; assessment; and inclusive practices for diverse literacy learners. Throughout the courses, students have opportunities to apply theories and new practices in local schools, followed by a semester-long reading practicum in a K-6 classroom. Instruction across the course sequence reflects a developmental orientation with an emphasis on literacy as a social practice. A central aim of the elementary literacy area is to prepare anti-racist teachers to work across all elementary classrooms. The Department has an active Solidarity Committee who guides work on equity, justice, and anti-racist education the Teacher Education Program.
